GOLF NEWS-Mombasa’s Nyali Golf and Country Club hosts the 47th Kenya Amateur Stroke Play Championship;

-Some 96 top Amateurs from the East African Region featuring in the Championship dubbed “Kenyatta Memorial Bowl.”

Some 96 top leading Golf Amateurs from the East African region are currently featuring in the 47th Kenya Amateur Stroke Play Championship that teed off at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club Course in Mombasa County, just a week after they met at the nearby sea-Link Mombasa Course.


The top cream of Golfers from Ethiopia, India, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, and the host Nation, Kenya teed off on Thursday ,1st August morning and will continue to battle for honors till Sunday 4th, 2024 playing over 54 holes.

The championship, dubbed “Kenyatta Memorial Bowl” is held in memory of Kenya’s first President, the Late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and the trophy was first presented in 1978 by Kenya Golf Union’s (KGU) first African Chairman Chris Kahara in 1978/79 and Col. M.J. Harbage the Kenya Golf Union (KGU) chairperson in 1977/78.


Among the prominent players to watch is the 2024 Coast Open-Barry Champion Michael Karanga of Kiambu Golf Club, known for his precise play and consistent performance and Adel Balala, a local favorite and one of Kenya’s top amateur golfers who has confirmed attendance after last weekend’s absence.

Michael Alunga from Uganda, a formidable competitor with a reputation for clutch performances and John Lejirma of Railway Golf Club, currently holding the title of Kenya’s top amateur golfer.


Local Senior Veterans featuring includes among others the KGU Coast Representative Eric Nyongesa, Mombasa Golf Club’s Vice Chairman Lawrence Odhiambo, Gurbux Singh, Martin Ombura, Tirus Githaiga, William Kaguta and Omar Lewa.

The champion of this year’s tournament will secure an automatic spot in the 2025 Magical Kenya Open and this coveted prize provides a significant platform for emerging talents to advance their careers and gain international recognition.
Additionally, the performance is important for the golfers as it counts towards their Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) points and WARG ranking.
KGU’s Tournament Director Chris Kinuthia extended the Union’s heartfelt thanks to NCBA for their generous sponsorship, which has made the event possible and that heir unwavering support highlights their commitment to fostering talent and promoting sports excellence in Kenya and beyond.
“Additionally, we are deeply grateful to Nyali Golf and Country Club for hosting this prestigious event and providing a world-class venue for our golfers,’ Said Kinuthia.

Club Captain Dinesh Sasan said, “It is a great honor to host the stroke play event at Nyali Golf and country Club. The course is in epic condition and playing well. It does offer competitors an option of risk and reward and the weather is conducive to support the cause. I wish all participants best luck to explore their true potential and have a great competition.”
Established in 1928, the Kenya Golf Union (KGU) is Kenya’s oldest continuous sports organization and affiliated with the Ministry of Sports & Culture, the Royal & Ancient, and the International Golf Federation.
KGU serves as the governing body for golf in Kenya uniting 38 Golf Clubs and 2 golfing societies across the nation and the Union’s core objectives encompass the advancement, promotion, and protection of golfing interests within Kenya.
