Lamu residents continue to bear the effect of the floods after the main Lamu-Mombasa Road was cut off by floods at Gamba near Garsen in Tana River County.
The Two sections of the Lamu-Garsen road have been cut off by the flooding Tana River, leaving commuters stranded on both sides of the road causing Speed boats to charge up to sh400 per trip for commuters from both sides to cross.
There are fears of a rise in the cost of living because the cut-off Lamu-Garsen road is the only link and main supply route between Lamu and Tana River counties from Mombasa.
Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Wednesday directed a contractor in charge of a section of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia-Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor project to ensure that it is complete in 9 months.
The CS made the remarks while visiting Lamu to assess the Lamu-Wito-Garsen-Gamba Road that was completely cut off by floods making transportation from the Lamu Port to Ethiopia impossible.
Now passengers use boats to cross one side to the other in order to connect and continue with the journey either to Mombasa or Lamu.
Murkomen was flanked in the tour by among others the Lamu County Governor Issa Timamy and the Lapsset Lamu Regional Manager Salim Bunu along with other stake holders toured the area to assess the situation.
The officials agreed that the road will be repaired as soon as possible but after the water floods in the area subsidize.
