Kenya’s own Roy Kanyi was among the select media and tech leaders invited to Accra, Ghana, for a high-level Google AI Roundtable and field visit as the global technology powerhouse unveiled a transformative $37 million investment package aimed at propelling Africa’s AI ecosystem.
The announcement made during a landmark event held at Google’s newly opened AI Community Center in Accra, marks a new chapter in the continent’s journey toward becoming a global player in artificial intelligence.

“What’s happening here in Accra is monumental, not just for Ghana but for Africa as a Whole. We’re seeing a shift from talk to tangible investments in local talent, infrastructure, and solutions. It’s a pivotal moment,” said Kanyi.
Africa’s AI opportunity is estimated at $30 billion but the continent still faces unique challenges from food insecurity and climate shocks to limited access to quality healthcare and underrepresentation of local languages in technology.
Google’s new round of funding seeks to address these gaps by supporting African-led solutions that are deeply rooted in the continent’s realities.
Among the key initiatives announced was a $25 million AI Collaborative for Food Security which will support African researchers and organizations in developing AI tools for early hunger forecasting, crop resilience, and smallholder farmer support. Another highlight was a $3 million grant to Masakhane, a research collective working to build open-source AI tools for over 40 African languages, ensuring greater language inclusion in digital spaces.
To further drive innovation, Google unveiled a catalytic fund to support more than 100 startups developing AI solutions in agriculture, health, and education.
These startups will receive a mix of funding, mentorship, and technical support to scale responsibly.
In addition to research and entrepreneurship, education remains a major pillar of Google’s strategy.
The company is rolling out 100,000 fully funded Google Career Certificate scholarships for Ghanaian students.
This is focused on high-demand AI skills such as Prompting Essentials, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, and IT Support.
Kenya, along with Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana, will also benefit from a $7 million investment to support AI curriculum development and digital safety training.
