MAARUFU MOHAMED-GOLF NEWSLINKS.
An estimated 240 golfers will be gracing the 2025 Kirima golf tournament at the Sea-Link Mombasa golf club and Nyali golf and Country club courses in Mombasa county over the weekend.
This annual tournament that brings together golfers from the Coast clubs and others from upcountry is organized by the Kirima Golfing Society (KGS) and usually includes activities beyond golf, such as vibrant Mirima beats and mountain delicacies.
Action for the preliminary round one kicks off in the Island at the par 71 Sea-Link Mombasa course on Friday, 17th, October, joint sponsored by Intercity, KGS, Andy Golf Pro Shop and Pepsi.
On Saturday, 18th, October, from 7am, the golfers will be teeing off at Nyali golf and country club course in mainland Mombasa north in this third edition of the tournament being jointly sponsored by Mombasa Continental Resort, Winstar Security, Dala Dala, Pauland, Premier Hospital, Ribena & Lucozade, KGS, and Isotonic Drink.
With the mixed diversity of the players salivating for top honors in Men and Ladies categories, its early to predict the winners and with Golf its only after the game is over.
KGS patron Wamunyua Hinga said, Kirima was started by all the golfing descendants of the mountain that reside and golf at the coast and is a celebration of the cultural diversity, particularly the rich Kikuyu culture (Watu wa Mrima) by featuring golf, food and music.
Hinga pointed out that various sterling prizes has been lined up for the winners in this third edition of the tournament to be played on two courses with day one in Mombasa and day two at Nyali adding that its usually an event that unites the mountain at the coast with all mountain clubs invited as well.
“This is a vibrant blend of sport, culture and coastal lifestyle, the field has never had short of 240, goats are killed in their 20s, Mugithi band is boarding for Mombasa from Muranga and Muratina is already soaked. It’s going to be fantastic to see so many talented golfers gathered and Iam honored to welcome you all for this exciting tournament. Let’s make it a weekend to remember,” said Hinga.
Nyali golf and Country club Captain Omar lewa said that the club is a confluence of cultures representing the whole lot of Kenya’s cultural diversity.
“We are fresh from last Friday’s ‘Sweet banana’ fest by our Kisii culture members led by our Hon Treasurer Yobesh Oyaro. On Saturday, we shall have a chance to enjoy golf with Murima cultural flavor hole 19. This has been made possible by our Members from the Kirima region led by our Club Chairman Jayne Githere, past Chairman Peter Kimanga and many other business leaders. We cherish and promote our diverse cultural heritage as a golf club and encourage other cultures to join in this kind of events,” noted Lewa.
The Captain pointed out that borrowing from other sports, Gor Mahia, Shabana and AFC leopards stand out as community cultured clubs and their fans bases transcend the whole country.
“We welcome golfers from across the nation and cultures to come and sample murima foods and drinks at our club. To all participants, remember that golf is a game of skill, strategy, and sportsmanship. Enjoy the experience and may the best golfer win. Let’s make this a day to cherish, “said Lewa.
According to programe, there will be a tree planting session by the Mirima elders that will be followed by brief ceremony to honor legendary golfer Duncan Nderitu Ndegwa.
Ndegwa born on 11th March 1925 is the first post-independence Head of Civil Service and Secretary to the Cabinet in Kenya and is believed to be the first Kenyan to play golf, having picked up the game in 1955 while a student at St Andrews University in Scotland.
And despite his age, Ndegwa still continues to play a few holes especially at his home club of Nyali golf and Country club course in Mombasa county.
