Rwanda’s top golfer, Celestin Nsanzuwera is looking forward to making the most of home advantage as he prepares to tee off in the SportsBiz Africa Golf Championship, the fifth leg of the Sunshine Development Tour-East Africa Swing, that teed off from Wedneday,3rd, September to Friday 5th, at the Kigali Golf Resort & Villas in Rwanda.
Nsanzuwera has been one of the standout performers of the inaugural East Africa Swing, consistently proving himself against some of the region’s best golfers.
He finished runner-up at Thika Greens, placed seventh at Ruiru, and delivered a thrilling run at the SunDev East Africa Johnnie Walker Classic in Diani, where he beat Kakamega’s Dismas Indiza in a dramatic final-round showdown to clinch the title.
The Diani triumph not only underlined his growing stature but also propelled him to the top of the Tour’s Order of Merit standings with 579 points, ahead of Kenya’s Njoroge Kibugu and veteran Dismas Indiza, who sit second and third respectively.

Earlier in the year, he also secured a big career milestone by winning the Q-School qualifier at the Great Rift Valley Golf Resort, cementing his status as one of the top regional talents to watch.
In the build-up to Kigali, the Rwandan pro has been fine-tuning his game, with a particular focus on consistency and short-game sharpness as he aims to claim his second win in the tour.
“I’ve been working hard to fine-tune my game, focusing a lot on consistency and short-game sharpness. Being here in Kigali has allowed me to adjust to the course conditions and the altitude, making sure every practice round is purposeful. It’s been a mix of physical preparation, course management, and mental focus,” he said.
On what he has worked on since his strong performances across the earlier legs of the Tour, Nsanzuwera added, “The biggest focus has been on my putting and approach play. Those tournaments showed me that my long game is in good shape, but converting opportunities on the greens is what really separates a top finish from a win. I’ve also been working on staying patient under pressure and making smart decisions when the conditions get tough.”

Looking ahead to this week’s challenge, Nsanzuwera acknowledged the strength of the field but expressed confidence in his form and consistency.
“My goal is always to put myself in contention come the final round. With the experience I’ve gained from the earlier legs, I feel confident I can challenge myself for the title. But more than that, I want to keep building consistency, collect valuable points, and show that East African golfers can compete at the highest level,” said Nzansuwera.
For Nsanzuwera, playing on familiar ground at Kigali Golf Resort & Villas brings added motivation.
“It’s a special feeling, there’s nothing like competing in front of your own people. I know the course well, and that definitely helps with course management and shot selection. But at the end of the day, it’s about execution. The home support will be a huge motivation for me to perform at my best,” He noted.
Reflecting on the impact of the Sunshine Development Tour-East Africa Swing, Nsanzuwera described the opportunity as transformative for his career and for regional golf.
“It means a lot, it’s a dream come true for many of us. Having OWGR points on offer is a big step forward for golf in this region because it opens doors to bigger events worldwide. Being part of this Tour feels like laying a foundation not only for my own career but for future generations of East African golfers,” said Nsanzuwera.
The SportsBiz Africa Golf Championship is presented by SportsBiz Africa and supported by EABL through the Johnnie Walker brand, Kigali Golf Resort & Villas, and Pure Travel.
The 54-hole championship will feature a competitive field of elite professionals and amateurs from across Africa, Europe and North America, with USD 25,000 in prize money and valuable Sunshine Development Tour Order of Merit, OWGR, and WAGR points on offer.
