Home Club’s Daniel Njenga was a man in celebration after emerging the overall winner in the 3rd edition of the ‘Sotet’ Golf tournament played at the par 71 Sea-link Mombasa Golf Club course in Mombasa County on Saturday.

The handicap 21 golfer was just lucky after surviving on a count back score of 40 stable ford points to to be declared to top player to scoop the overall trophy.

“I have just been in Mombasa for two years, this is now my home and yes when at home you do better. It has also been a brilliant day characterized by strong winds from the Indian Ocean, but I stayed focused, one shot at a time, played smart and trusted my swings, “said Njenga.
He had tied with handicap 23 David Mbugua who was the Men runners up while handicap 24 Danson Mutero was placed third on 39 points and handicap 1 William Kaguta was the gross winner on a 3 under par 68 gross.
‘Sotet’ Golfers Association (SGA) composed of Golfers from the North and South Rift Valley regions of Kenya, organized the daylong 18 holes stable ford tournament that attracted a large number of 144 players from across the Country playing under the theme “Celebrating Culture and Diversity.”


It was jointly sponsored by Sidian Bank, Safaricom, Mira Heights, Hotel Saphire, Khushi Motors, Pro Golf Master, The Glenlivet, Villa Becky, Credit Bank, Pauland and Stima Sacco.
However, the players were stunned after missing a ‘Hole in One’ to walk home with a brand new Toyota Harrier car worth Ksh.5.5 million donated by Khushi Motors, where Peter Kibanya recorded a near miss after his shot landed only 4.5 feet away from the par 3-12 th, hole where the car was placed.

In the Ladies side, Kenya Navy lady golfers dominated the leader board with handicap 18 Orpha Wamaitha scoring 40 points for the top slot as handicap 12 Grace Kwamboka sat second on 38 points beating third placed handicap 16 Faith Muteti to the third spot by a single slot.
Handicap 16 Johnson Wamunyua swept the Senior title with 34 points and Mwai Mariga playing off handicap 20 carded 30 points to win the Junior prize.
The high handicappers’ men winner was handicap 20 Daniel Adiemo on 37 points and the same prize for the Ladies’ was claimed by handicap 49 Pocoty Koskei with a score of 39 points.
‘Sotet’ Vice Chairman Edwin Kiptoo playing off handicap 9 was the ‘Sotet’ winner with 38 points while handicap 15 Dr. Kibet Kikwai on 37 points and handicap 15 Johanna Cheptoo with 33 points were the runners up and third placed respectively.

Caroline Mokaya playing off handicap 12 carded 37 points to emerge the ‘Sotet’ Lady winner with handicap 19 Anne Cherop claiming the runners up slot on 34 points beating handicap 25 Janet Wasike to third place on a single point difference.
Club Captain George Mokaya appreciated all the players and the ‘Sotet’ golfers from Coast, North and South Rift Valley regions of Kenya for the success of the tournament.
“We are pleased and privileged to have hosted you again and the turnout and enormous support has been great in this tournament. The weather has been good today and the course played well actually in its pristine condition. Congratulations to the winners and those who did not, don’t blame us, but keep on trying, “said Mokaya.

‘Sotet’ Chairman Eliud Bett, flanked by his Patron Maj.Gen (RTD) Anthony Rob said it has been a fantastic tournament and extended their deepest gratitude to all supporters and players who joined the celebration of Kalenjin excellence and heritage, bringing a unique cultural element to the sport.
“This annual event is a celebration of golf and Kalenjin heritage and is more than just a competition but a celebration of golf’s unique spirit and our community’s camaraderie. To our supporters, your partnership demonstrates your commitment to promoting the sport and our community while the players’ participation is what makes this tournament truly special, “said Bett.
The Chairman further explained that the word ‘Sotet’ itself is a Kalenjin term, reflecting the cultural focus of the event that often includes elements of Kalenjin tradition and is a point of pride for the community.
He pointed out that ‘Sotet’ formed to promote the Youths, network and support the Communities, is aimed at celebrating the heritage and rich Kalenjin culture.
The two leaders promised to recruit more youths from the Rift Valley Region and across the Country to join the Sport of Golf and make it more popular like Athletics and other Sports.
