Home golfer Justin Kaburu outshined colleagues in this year’s Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and Caterers (KAHC) golf tournament staged at the par 71 Nyali golf and country club course in Mombasa county on Saturday.

Playing off handicap 28, Kaburu carded a brilliant 45 count back score points to emerge the overall winner in the day long 18 holes’ tournament that brought together 140 players across the Coast golf clubs as well as upcountry clubs’ players featuring guests and staffs with valid handicaps.
“I have nothing to tell you on how I played but it was just my day. Beating such a large number of good players has not been easy and Iam happy today following this victory. It’s just a proud moment for me and I would like to thank all those who put this successful tournament together and looking forward to greater victories, “said Kaburu.
Adel Balala playing minus 1 handicap was the proud winner of the best gross category with a level par 71 gross and the longest drive men winner of the day.
Handicap 17 Dixon Wariunge who was displaced out from the top spot on a count back of score of 45 points, however settled for the Men winner’s prize while handicap 45 Muzahim Taib scored 42 points to claim the runners up place.
Millicent Palo playing off handicap 36 took command of the ladies by carding 40 points to emerge the lady winner beating handicap 28 Rose Njogu to the runners up place by a three points difference.
Handicap 23 Salim Tweshe was the senior winner on 37 points while handicap 37 Angel Wangari brought 39 points to claim the Junior prize and handicap 20 Lucas Kampa was the KAHC member winner with 40 points.
It was a tight moment in the guest category after handicap 24 Richie Sobayeni survived on a countback score of 31 points to claim the winner’s prize tying on the same score with runners placed handicap 26 Stephen Kisevu.
Other results were Best first nine Winner-Sherman Ahmed (10)-20 points, Best second nine winner-Bharat Chavda (25)-23 points, longest drive men winner-Adel Balala, Longest drive lady winner-Angel Wangari, Nearest to the pin men winner-Rumil Jayasinghe-6 feet & 7 inches, Nearest to the pin lady winner-Janet Wasike-3 feet & 4 inches and Piga mingi winner-Nelson Mburugu (41)-12 points.
The tournament under the KAHC umbrella was supported by co-sponsored Tourism Fund, NSSF, Equity Bank, DSTV, Kenya Tourism Board, Kenya Utali College among others.
Club captain Omar Lewa thanked all the sponsors for bringing the tournament once again to Nyali saying it was enjoyable and successful.
“We as a Club are greatly honored to have this tournament back and hoped everyone enjoyed our facilities including the course that is in great shape. Kindly do not blame us for those who did not win anything but just try another time and we promise to continue maintaining this course and our club facilities to a high standard in order attract more sponsors, “said Lewa.

KAHC Chief Executive Officer Mike Macharia praised the club and players for the successful tournament that came after their two days annual Tourism conference and promised to make a comeback next year in a bigger way.

“We are once again proud to be coming back to Nyali for this tournament after our two days Tourism conference. This Charity golf tournament has been going on for 21 years and Nyali has been the host for 16 years. Thisis one our successful programms in support of the needy around the country including University students that continues doing well and We thank all our co-sponsors for their continuous support,” said Macharia who was also one of the players.

Elsewhere at Ruiru Sports club course in the same day, Njoro’s Mercy Nyanchama played with great composure and precision in carding a superb 74 gross to outshine a competitive field in one in the Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) calendar Golfer of the Year (GOTY) tournament that featured top female golfers across the country.
“Today everything just came together. The course was in great condition and I felt confident with every shot. Competing against such talented ladies and coming out on top is truly humbling. I’m grateful to playing in such a well-organized event, “said Nyanchama.
The competition in Division A gross was intense where handicap -1 Kanana Muthomi edging out her peers to claim the gross winner’s title on a two-way countback score of 77 gross after tying on the same score with runners up placed Benta Khanili and third placed handicap 0 Chanelle Wangari.
The Division A Nett category saw handicap 20 Beldina Monchari emerge top on a countback of score 67 nett also tying with handicap 18 Lydia Mokaya who secured the runner-up place and handicap 19 Rebecca Njui was third placed third on 69 nett.
Handicap 21 Virginia Munyao brought 91 gross to win in the Division B with handicap 23 Priscilla Karobia on 92 gross and handicap 22 Anne Ngumba on 94 gross sitting as runner up and third placed respectively.
The Division B Nett category was won by handicap 37 Elizabeth Nyambura on 62 nett while handicap 31 Peris Kamau recorded 67 nett for the runner-up slot and handicap 30 Patriciah Ngahu came third with 71 nett.
Club Lady Captain Rodah Mukami said they are proud to have hosted this prestigious series where talent on display was simply outstanding.
“Tournaments like these are not just about competition but about growing the game and inspiring the next generation of female golfers,” said Mukami.
