-Mutuku emerges King of the Course in ICEA Lion tourney at Machakos bagging his first major title of the season;

Gilbert Mutuku was crowned the king of the course after emerging the overall winner at this year’s opener of the 8th edition of the ICEA LION King of the Course golf series tournament played at the nine-hole Machakos Country Club Course in Machakos County on Saturday.

The handicap 17 Mutulu used his home club course advantage to record an excellent 42 stable ford points to emerge the overall winner and record his first major title of the season after beating a large number of 177 golfers.
“It was a challenging day and a bad season last year but today things have changed and Aim greatly humbled to win this series. I would like to thank my laying partners, the Club and the organizers for such a wonderful day and looking forward to playing better in the fourth coming events.”Said Mutuku.
Handicap 16 Gregory Ndunda brought a count back score of 39 pints to emerge the Member winner after tying on the same score with first runners up placed handicap 11 Julius Kioko while handicap 17 Bernard Muthiya was the second runners up on a 37 points and handicap 17 John Nzioka claimed the third runners up place on 36 points.
Bill Kalya playing off handicap 10 carded 38 points to win the Guest prize and handicap 21 Elizabeth Ng’ethe on 29 points was the ICEA Staff winner.

Taking the lady’s Title was handicap 6 Diana Mbuba with 33 points beating first runners up placed handicap 20 Veronica Muthiani who returned a score of 28 points.
John Kitaka playing off handicap 16 brought a good score of 40 points to win the Junior prize and the Senior prize for those above 65 years old was won by handicap 19 John Masai with a score of 36 points.
The Handicap Prizes for the golfers of handicap 29+ men and handicap 37+ Ladies were won by handicap 41 Chris Katiku on 40 points and handicap 48 Jemimah Samuel with 32 points respectively.
The daylong 18 holes event sponsored by ICEA LION attracted a robust field of golfers from both Machakos and the wider Nairobi metropolitan area.
This follows the resounding success of the 7th edition which unfolded across 7 different clubs nationwide and concluded with a spectacular finale at Nyali in October last year.
Earlier on Friday at the same venue, the sponsor organized a junior golf tournament which served as the captivating prelude to the Saturday tourney that had a turnout of 31 young golfers.
Handicap 16 John Kitaka carded 40 nett to emerge the overall winner while handicap 40 Myles Mwendwa was the runners up with 46 nett.
Machakos Golf Club Captain Stephen Musyoka said the event has been successful and thanked the Sponsor for the support and all the players for attending in large numbers making noting that the course is in excellent condition and ready to host any event.
The Captain of ICEA LION Joe Mboya said the Grand Winner of the 2023 series has been scheduled to participate in 2024 Lekoa Classic on 26 th and 27 th of April 2024 at Parys Golf and Country Estate-Vaal De Grace, in South Africa.
Present during the evening prize giving dinner ceremony were the ICEA LION Chief Executive Officer Philip Lopokoiyit, ICEA LION Chairman Joe Wangai, Machakos Club Chairman David Mila, Club Trustees, Club Management Committees, Club Golf Captain Stephen Musyoka, Club Vice-Captain Edwin Saluni, Club Lady Captain Felistus Mativo, ICEA LION King of the Course Series Captain Joe Mboya and Convener of the King of the Course Series Swarn Singh.
Lopokoiyit extended his heartfelt gratitude to all present for gracing the event at this first tournament of the annual ICEA LION King of the Course golf series and wished them a Happy New year.
“I also appreciate my four ball team of B.Rono, S.Singh, and M.Wambua who were a gracious team and a great sport to play with. In respect to my performance on the course, I want to say that what I have learnt today was there are still another 360 days to apply remedial action, “said Lopokoiyit.

According to the ICEA Lion 2024 Golf Calendar, This year’s Series has also introduced a fresh format, with events scheduled to occur on the first weekend of every month from January departing from the traditional weekly, where Professionals, Amateurs and juniors have been invited.
After Machakos, the series is set for Thika Greens Golf Resort on February 2, 2024 then move to Nanyuki Sports Club on March 9, 2024 and subsequently to Nandi Bears on May 25, 2024 among others culminating in the grand finale at Nyali in October 2024.
