The 18 holes par 73 Kitale Golf course known for its challenging layout, lush surroundings and resident monkeys hosts an estimated 200 players in the much anticipated grand finale of the Mulembe home coming Golf tournament.
Dubbed as Home Coming, the two days’ tournament that ends Saturday is organized by Mulembe Golfing Society (MGS), an organization in Kenya that brings together Golfers from the Western region, with players from Kericho, Kisii, Nandi Bears, Kakamega, Eldoret with others across the Country.
Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has pumped in a prize money share kitty of Ksh. 500,000 for the Professionals while Elite Amateurs’ has a share of kitty of Ksh. 250,000 from friends of Mulembe and Juniors are gracing the tournament.
Club Captain Andrew Birir said the approximately 6,990 yards historic, picturesque 18-hole course with well-maintained diverse layouts, is in pristine condition and ready to host the tournament.
“The Golf course with the dry season that has since kicked in and with no water to compliment the rains is running and the greens are holding the Golf balls. Generally, the Course is playing short and we are likely to witness very low scores during the Tournaments. The green keeping preparing the course under such adverse weather conditions have been chaperoned by Lawrence Kaptoge, who has even donated his own machinery during the past few weekends in preparation of this grand Golf finale, “said Birir.
Among the top Amateurs to watch includes the recent Kenya Amateurs Golf Championship (KAGC) Trans-open (Kitale) and Altitude (Nyahururu) Champion Sammy Mulama from Golf Park Golf Club who last weekend tied seven overall in the Nyali Open Championship at Mombasa.
Mulama who is also tied seventh in the 2025 KAGC series has confirmed participation and said he is well prepared and ready for any challenges against his Amateur colleagues.
“Iam prepared. I’m swinging well at the moment. Kitale is my home where my story began and where I started playing Golf too. God willing am going to win the Elite amateur category. I’m going to use the home advantage to overcome any challenges, “said Mulala.
MGS Chairman Eric Nyongesa also a prolific Player who recently won a band new Audi Q Car worth Ksh.4.2 million, courtesy of Kushi Motors after sinking a hole in one in the Kambasome tournament at the Sea link Mombasa course, is also among the top Amateurs players who may surprise the leaderboard.
He said the mood in the North Rift is heavily expectant for the Annual Mulembe Golf and there are to specifically play the Tournament. It is the talk of town with much entertainment expected from the now prolific musician Micah Wanyenje and mercurial Dj Knit spin as players sip away ‘Busaa’.
Nyongesa said that the Mulembe Golfing Sports Club, which is a virtual Golf Club registered by the Registrar of Sports, has during the year hosted several successful Golf tournaments on various Golf Courses namely the Mulembe Alpha Tournament at Sigona Club, Match play between Mulembe vs Great Rift Valley Golfing Society won by Mulembe at Royal Nairobi, Kambasome Vs Mulembe at Machakos Country Club and Kwitsi Khandi Tournament at Karen Country Club.
“Our events often incorporate a cultural flair and emphasize camaraderie among Golfer and the Home Coming Tournament is calculated to provide a unique Golfing experience to various cadres of Golfers from Juniors Golfer, ordinary Amateurs, Elite amateurs and Professional Golfers, “said Nyongesa.
He pointed out that the leadership of the Board of MGS has in the past several months worked round the clock to raise funds towards hosting of the grand finale and the past and forth coming Golf tournaments have largely been supported by the members and Corporates related or associated with some members.
“The goal of the society is to unite Golfing communities in Western Kenya, systematically support regional talent (including juniors), and hosts a series of events, held at various Clubs across Kenya, such as Royal Nairobi Golf Club, Mombasa Golf Club, Machakos Golf Club and Muthaiga Golf Club.
After this tournament, Amateurs will now take an early festive holidays break before returning back to the greens from January to embark on a busy 2026 golfing Calendar.
