Coast veteran golfer Martin Wahome (Senior) recorded a brilliant 68 nett to win the June Mug prize in the June mug golf tournament played at the Mombasa golf club course in Mombasa county on Saturday.
The handicap 11 golfer commonly referred to as ‘Father of Champions’ following his sons Mathew Wahome and Andrew Wahome’s dominance in the golf scene was all smiles in registering a sweet victory for the Division A category in the 18 holes’ tournament featuring 100 golfers and sponsored by the club Captain George Mokaya.
“I have not been at the podium for quite long and I was just enjoying my weekend game as usual with friends today and yes here is the victory, “said Wahome.
Handicap 6 Martin Ombura with 71 nett and John Orioro playing off handicap 8 on 72 nett were the runners up and third placed respectively.
Francis Muthamia playing off handicap 17 carded 69 nett to win the Division category while the club’s captain George Mokaya survived on account back score of 71nett after tying with third place handicap 17 Elvis Nduati.
The Division C section saw handicap 26 clinch the top prize after carding 69 nett as handicap 28 Junior Nick Chavda came in second on 71 nett and Michael Sangoro playing off handicap 17 brought 72 nett to sit third.
Peter Gitau playing off handicap 30 took command of the Division D by carding 76 nett while Martin Ombura on 77 gross and handicap 24 Michael Zeni with 61 nett were declared the best gross and best guest winners respectively.
Elsewhere, handicap 1 Mercy Nyanchama from Njoro golf club carded a 3 over par 74 gross to emerge the Division A winner and claim top command in the final leg of the Ladies Coast open that ended at Nyali golf and country club course in Mombasa County also on Saturday.
Home club’s junior Alyssa Jamal playing off handicap 8 came behind on 77 gross for the runners up slot and Tanzania’s handicap 3 Elias Vicky brought 78 gross for the third place.
Handicap 18 Sandrah Githere from Limuru was the nett winner in the same division with 67 nett while Vetlab’s handicap 18 Betty Adhiambo carded a count back score of 69 nett for the runners up slot after tying with Diamond Leisure’s handicap 18 Caroline Mokaya who was third.
Handicap 22 Linda Munyao of Nakuru won the Division B category on a count back score of 92 gross, tying wit runners placed handicap 22 Petty Kigwe of Thika sports and home club’s handicap 29 Hellen Wanjiri had 94 gross for the third slot.
The nett winner was handicap 32 Joyce Ngwiri with a score of 68 nett while handicap 34 Tabitha kamunya on 69 net and handicap 31 Margaret Kalekye with 70 nett were the runners up and third placed respectively.
This ladies coast circuit is organized by the Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) and featured elite Amateur Ladies from the Country, Tanzania and Uganda.
It started last Monday at Malindi, then Vipingo Baobab ridge both in Kilifi County before crossing the Likoni ferry to Diamond Leisure course in Kwale County before coming to Mombasa golf club course and finally at Nyali, both courses in Mombasa County.
