The tournament was initially an event between Royal Nairobi and Mombasa Golf Clubs, eventually expanding to include other clubs.
The shield itself was donated by Mr. Tannahill where the tournament was renamed in his honor in 1938 and the trophy awarded to the winning team was renamed the Tannahill Shield recognizing the contribution of Mr. Tannahill, the first Honorary Secretary of the Kenya Golf Union (KGU).
The Tannahill Shield has become a significant event in the Kenyan golfing calendar with many of the top amateur players from various clubs participating each year and continues to be a major inter-club event celebrated for its history tradition, and sportsmanship.
