There was smiles and cheers as the Mombasa Golf Club’s 11 man champions of the Tanna hill Shield 2025 were celebrated with medals and cash prizes after the Club’s March Mug and Medal tournament held at the par 71 Sea-Link course in Mombasa County on Saturday.

Home Club’s Henry Kamau was the star of the day playing against the monsoon strong winds and a cold day of the changing weather pattern to clinch the top title.
Playing off handicap -2 Kamau played brilliantly against the current monsoon winds to record an excellent 66 gross and 68 nett to emerge the overall gross and Division A nett winner respectively of the March Mug tournament.
“I really thank God for this win I played my best. The course was playing very well and also the team I was playing with was very supportive and very competitive with Monica Kamundi, William Odeck and Aamil Mughal. Now I am ready to join professional events with confidence that I can do it. Hopefully in August I will enroll in their categories, “said Kamau.
The 18 holes’ tournament that featured 130 players at the par 71 Course and sponsored by Marble Seaview Shanzu and MMK was to celebrate the Club’s 11-man team who recently claimed their first-ever Tannahill Shield victory in the centennial edition of the prestigious Easter Golf Tournament, with a total gross of 48 points across four intense rounds of play.
Martin Ombura playing off handicap 8 and handicap 12 Justin Ongera were the Division A runners up and third placed.
The Division B saw handicap 16 Dr. Johnson Muriuki winning on 70 nett while left handed handicap 18 Elijah Ibua claimed the runners up spot on 71 nett and handicap 15 Paul Koech was third with 72 nett.
Handicap 19 Eliud Bett was the Division C winner on 64 nett while handicap 28 Nick Navda on 65 nett and handicap 19 Wilfred Achila on 66 nett were the runners up and third placed respectively.
Handicap 31 Peter Gitau dominated the Division C category claiming the top prize on 67 nett and Chris Katiku from Nyali Golf and Country Club emerged the best guest with 73 nett.

In the Ladies Medal handicap 19 Wanjiku Kinyeru carded 70 nett to claim the Division A prize, while handicap 24 Carol Munyi on 72 nett and handicap 39 Gladys Haji with 83 nett were the Division B and C winners respectively.

The Club’s Vice-Captain Paul Koech, flanked by his Vice Chairman Francis Muthamia showered praises to the Tannahill Shield team saying all the Club members were proud having the shield come to Mombasa for the first time after trying for many years.
“We also thank the members and NCBA for their support towards the team and urge you to continue with the with the support as we plan to be training our team at least three months before the tournament, “said Koech and Muthamia.
The Mombasa Centennial Team Manager Eric Nyongesa said the Club’s victory in this year’s Tanna Shield tournament played annually over Easter holidays at Royal Nairobi Golf Club for the last 100 years, was historical and appreciated the team by awarding them with medals and cash prize tokens.
“Today we are here to celebrate our gallant soldiers who delivered a lifetime win for the Club and I urge the Club members to continue supporting the team in order to retain the Shield. I also appreciate the Team Coach Fred Kamau and Captain Gubux Singh for setting up a formidable team that has brought us this pride. Its not easy but we did it and now we must lay more structures to ensure the team is solid, “said Nyongesa.

Team Mombasa had an impressive line-up of elite amateurs including Adel Balala, William Odeck, Sammy Mulama, Josphat Rono, Henry Kamau, Feisal Lasker, George Munyao, Charles Rob and promising Junior Nathan Ngweno.
The team that participated this year included hosts Royal Nairobi Golf Club, Mombasa Golf Club, Muthaiga Golf Club, Kenya Railway Golf Club, Vet Lab Sports Club, Sigona Golf Club, Western Kenya team, Windsor Golf Hotel and Country Club and Limuru Country Club.
For about a hundred years, Golfers from Mombasa Golf Club often travel to Royal Nairobi Golf Club, the oldest in the country founded in 1906, to traditionally play the annual Tannahill Shield Golf tournament over Easter holidays.
Tannahill Shield is a prestigious annual inter-club foursomes Golf tournament in Kenya, inaugurated in 1924 and is one of the largest Amateur Golf events in Sub-Saharan Africa and this year marked the 100th edition featuring nine elite Golfing teams from across the country.
Elsewhere, handicap 3 Pratik Patel carded 78 gross to emerge the gross winner in the May Mug tournament played at Nyali Golf and Country Club course in Mombasa County on Saturday.
Handicap 11 Jimmy King’ori won the A division category on 72 nett, with handicap 11 Martin Ombura playing 73 nett for the runners up slot and the third place on 75 nett was by handicap 3 Pratik Patel.
