Mombasa Lawyer Lumatete Walubengo Muchai was the man of the day after emerging the overall winner of the 2025 Sweet Banana golf tournament played at the par 71 Nyali golf and Country club course in Mombasa county on Friday.
The handicap 19 player brought the day’s best score of 44 stable ford points to clinch the top prize, that featured a team of 167 golfers in the day long 18 holes’ annual tournament organized by the Abagusii community.
“Today Iam indeed honored to be at the podium after many months of absence. I would like to thank my amazing four ball team, my family and friends for their unwavering support and also being thrilled to have emerged victorious in this tournament. It has been a fantastic day through the fairways and this win came through strategy and perseverance, and I’m proud to have applied these skills to my game. As a lawyer and a golfer, I have today learned that both require dedication, hard work and a willingness to take risks. Iam proud to have taken the challenge and come out on top, “Said Lumatete.
Gurbux Singh playing off handicap 6 brought a 5 over par 76 gross to emerge the Best men gross winner while handicap 15 Teresia Odoo was the Best lady winner with 83 gross.
Handicap 11 Faizullah Kudrati survived to win the Men prize for the Division 5 to 12 players after tying on the same score with runners placed handicap 3 William Kaguta while handicap 10 Shem Tubei was third having scored 32 points.
Mary Mariga playing off 18 carded 35 points to claim the best lady prize in the Division A for players between handicap 5 to 20, beating handicap 19 Zaituni Mohamed to the runners up slot by a two points difference.
In Division B for players with handicap 13 to 18, Alpesh Malde playing off handicap 26 survived to take the top prize after tying on 38 count back points with runners placed handicap 17 Charles Ndegwa.
Handicap 22 Irene Mokua recorded 42 points to dominate the Ladies Division B for handicappers 21 to 36 as Mombasa golf club’s former Lady Captain Gladys Kasi playing off handicap 26 claimed the runners up slot on 40 points.
Handicap 30 Meshack Keter on 40 points won the Division C category for players handicapped 29 & 37 to 54 with handicap 35 David Kabacia recoding 33 points for the runners up slot.
The Club’s former Chairman Akram Sheikh playing off handicap 19 brought 36 points to win the senior prize and handicap 10 Tonny Gachoka emerged the junior winner also on 36 points.
The Sweet Banana member winner was handicap 23 Caroline Nyarando who played 39 points beating handicap 19 George Mokua to the runners up slot by a three points difference.
Handicap 35 Isiah Masinde scored 35 points to emerge the guest winner while handicap 3 Henry Kamau on 37 points and handicap 7 Feisal Lasker with 33 points were the Invited Coastal clubs’ winner and runners up respectively.
Club Vice-Captain Muzzahim Taib thanked everyone who made the tournament possible and extended his heartfelt congratulations to all the winners.
“Golf is a game of ups and downs, but it’s how we respond to challenges that defines us. As we celebrate our winners tonight, let’s also remember the importance of sportsmanship, camaraderie and respect for the game. These values are what make golf so special. I would like to encourage everyone to keep practicing, continue learning and enjoying the game as we prepare for more upcoming tournaments lined up.
