It was celebrations after the Royal Nairobi Golf Team emerged the winners of this year’s TannaHill Shield Golf tournament hosted at the Club’s Course in Nairobi County on Sunday.
The main team composed of Njogu Kungu, Korby Gatiramu, Jetinder Thethy, Abner Onsomu garnered a combined 39 points after four rounds in a three days event from Friday to claim victory in this 99th edition of the tournament after a five year’s wait of struggling.
Team Captain Hoseah Kogo said they are excited about the win which came after playing with a positive strategy.
“This is an exciting moment for us as Royals, after five years of fighting on the course, and now we are putting a lot of focus on our juniors preparing them well because they are the future golfers, “said Kogo.
Club Captain Dr.Richard Owino it has been a great day with victory especially happening at his time in office was something that will be remembered for a long period.
“Now our focus is the preparation for the Event’s Centenary celebrations in the coming event and he Club is planning to invite officials from Royal Clubs across the World and some from the Royal and Ancient golf clubs of Scotland, “said Owino.
The Western team were second on accumulative 38 points while multiple champions Muthaiga brought 36 points to sit third.
It was a sad day for the defending Champions Sigona Golf club team who finished fourth 33 points, a point ahead of fifth placed Kenya Railways team.
Vetlab Sports Club team were sixth on 29 points, ahead of Mombasa team settling for the seventh slot on 28 points while Limuru with 27 points and Karen on 26 points were the eighth and ninth places respectively.

The weeklong event traditionally played around Easter holidays started with the seniors aged over 55 years old who played for two days from Monday to Tuesday and won by Muthaiga team.
After the conclusion of the three days main event from Good Friday (March 29th ) to Sunday (March,31st), Juniors took on the course from Monday 1st,April and concludes on Tuesday,2nd before they return back to School for Exams.

Other Sponsors were Moyo,Ezo,Sekura Limited,Kihet,KenGen,Kerngeti,Jos Hansen,and farmers Choice among others.

The tournament regarded as one of the most prestigious amateur golf events in sub Saharan Africa,  featured best Amateur players from the host Royal Nairobi Golf Club, Muthaiga Country Club, Karen Country Club, Vetlab Sports Club, Railway Golf Club, Western Kenya, Mombasa Golf Club, Limuru Country Club and the defending champions Sigona Golf Club.

The Tannahill Shield is the brainchild of Major Arthur Tannahill and was inaugurated in 1924 as an annual event when the general committee of the then Nairobi Golf Club invited teams representing Mombasa, Nyeri,Kiambu Nakuru, and Muthaiga to participate in the tournament.
Royal Nairobi Golf Club is a prestigious private members’ golf Club and is the only club in Kenya with the Royal status that reciprocates with all other Royal Chartered Clubs Worldwide.
This is Kenya’s oldest club that was founded as a 9-hole golf course with a basic club house and was founded in 1906, and in 2006 it celebrated a Century of Golfing.
The first captain of the Club, Mr. C. Hirtzell, was duly elected on 14th April 1908, and the Club’s first President Sir Charles Bowring took office in 1920, while first lady Captain took office in 1933.
The history of golf in Kenya is intertwined with the history of RNGC being the oldest Golf Club in the Nation and always referred to as ‘the real home of golf’ in Kenya.
RNGC continues to host the oldest golf tournament in Kenya namely the Easter Tournament (Tannahill Shield) and brings together the country’s top Amateur golfers over three days during Easter since 1924.
In 1938, it was decided to rename the trophy awarded to the winning team during the Tournament as the Tannahill Shield, in appreciation of Mr. Tannahill who donated the shield, and was the first Honorary Secretary of Kenya Golf Union (KGU).
He also served as the president of RNGC and the first meeting of KGU was held at RNGC in 1923.
