Some 120 players will be seeking for top honors in the 2025 ‘Chenda Chenda’ golf tournament to be played at the
9-hole Malindi golf & country club course in Kilifi County on Saturday.
Tournament convener Paul Chivatsi said the daylong 18 long holes’ tournament themed “Let’s play and celebrate our heritage” has attracted both golfers and non-golfers to the interesting course built around dunes which then winds its way through forest and wetlands with an additional greens and tees that creates the feeling of a full 18-holes.
He explained that “Chenda Chenda” is a significant annual cultural festival on the Kenyan coast, showcasing traditional Mijikenda heritage, music, dance and cuisine with the aim of promoting cultural preservation, unity and tourism in the region.
“The tournament will be a celebrating of both sport and the vibrant heritage of the Mijikenda people while open to both golfers and non-golfers to who will have a glimpse of the action on the course. It promises an exciting day of competition, culture, and community engagement. The occasion will not only promote unity and local traditions but also strengthen Malindi’s position as a cultural and sporting hub, “said Chivatsi.
Chivatsi will be among the strong team to watch that includes home club’s Walter Okoth, Vice-Captain Joshua Matei, Nyalis Wilson Rading and Andrew Miheso.

The ladies will be led by among others, the club’s immediate Lady Captain Hamida Chidagaya, Zipporah Gitonga, Maria Giada and Sophia Abdillahi who making a comeback after staying away from the course for quite long.
The tournament that comes after last weekend’s Malindi Open that saw Windsor’s Elvis Muigua clinch the Vasco Da Gama cup through a match play against defending Champion Michael Karanja and Ebill Omollo, has received a massive joint sponsorship from Q Boutique Resort Malindi, Gideon Mung’aro Foundation, Geosurveys and Geospatial Information Limited.
Others are DFS Limited, Express Lines Ltd, Zuri Electronics, Office of the MP Malindi Constituency, Kabibi Mpenzi Foundation, Masharubu Furniture, The Kasa Malindi, Agitech Seedlings, Printedia, Kasa Fitness, Friends of Chenda Chenda, Astra, and Tezzo.
This tournament is a culmination of the ‘Chenda Chenda’ Festival celebrations featuring the nine Coastal tribes, that kicked off from September 9 th, 2025 in Kwale County at Kaya Mtswakara and in Kilifi County at Pwani University.
Meanwhile Adds Brian Jayson, Oxygene Pr, some 150 top amateur golfers from around the country converge when the Lion roars in the highly awaited 20th leg of the ongoing KCB East Africa golf tour at 18-hole par 73 Kitale golf club course also on Saturday.
The day long tournament expected to tee off at 6:30 am for the morning action and the afternoon tee from 11:30 am will see the top team automatically qualify for the grand finale slated for December.
Club Captain Andrew Birir said, “For the third year running, we are immensely privileged to be part of the Tour that has become a beacon of hope to thousands of enthusiasts who intend to sharpen their skills. We are ready for the day as the course is in absolute best condition.”
Recently, at the Nyeri Club, two teams booked their slots in the grand finale who included Serah Githaiga, Rose Wamuyu, Patrick Mwaniki, Patrick Matheri, Lady Captain Perister Gaitho, David Maina, Daisy Mumbi, and Newton Wambugu, joining other teams that have already secured their places.
The tour has already reached over 2,000 participants and over 1,000 juniors through the golf clinics that ran concurrently with the series, highlighting its growing influence in fostering a golfing culture within the East African region.
In Kenya, the tour has traversed Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisii, Uasin Gishu, Nandi, Kisii, Kiambu, Nyeri, Kericho, Nairobi and Kisumu Counties while regionally, it has been to Burundi and Uganda with Tanzania set to host its version this weekend.
KCB Group Director Marketing and Communications Rosalind Gichuru noted that, “The tour is growing in influence and impact. We have touched thousands of enthusiasts since we launched this series back in 2023. Our focus is to continue inspiring the next generation of talent while also allowing amateurs to hone their skills to cement Kenya’s growing reputation as a golfing destination.”
