Team-Kenya squad seek to regain glory at the 2026 Victoria cup golf tournament to be staged at the neighboring Uganda’s 18 holes par 71 Entebbe Golf course, situated along Lake Victoria and one of the oldest golf courses in East Africa region having been established in 1901.
According to a latest press release from KGU, the tournament kick starts today on Wednesday 4th, with practice session ahead of the main action kicking off from tomorrow Thursday 5th to Saturday 7th.
The ten-man squad selected last month by Kenya Golf Union (KGU) led by captain Elvis Muigua of Kiambu golf club and which includes immediate past captain John Captain John Lejirma of Royal Nairobi golf club has assured Kenyans that the trophy they bitterly lost to Ugandans at Kipipiri golf resort course last year in Nyandarua county, will be coming home.
Muigua said yesterday that the team is very confident going to the tournament after having had a three days more training session at Naivasha.
“We had amazing time with the players having the team work because Victoria cup is more of a team work game, getting to know each other’s game and having good chemistry. Our team is definitely going to dominate course and fully confident to bring the trophy home, “said Muigua.
On his part Lejirma said, “The boys have taken preparation seriously, early sessions, structured practice and good energy throughout. So we are locked in and ready for serious business in Entebbe.”
Other amateurs to represent the country ahead of the showdown includes, Isaac Makokha, Daniel Kiragu and Krish Shah who were all selected in accordance with the KGU’s approved selection framework, taking into account performance in the 2025 Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) standings and the Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) Order of Merit.
The Juniors selected from the Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) Order of Merit includes Junaid Manji, Tsevi Soni, Yuvraj Rajput, Mwathi Gicheru, with the wild card being taken by Kevin Anyien.
The four Junior players together with the wildcard pick, are all members of the High Performance Program (HPP), an initiative supported by The R&A, designed to identify, nurture and prepare Kenya’s most promising golfers for elite regional and international competition.
The Kenya squad is under coach Ali Khimji while Brian Akun and Chris Kinuthia are the Team manager and Head of delegation respectively.
Team Uganda captain John Musiimenta and head coach Lt. Flavia Namakula said that as the hosts and defending champion, the players have been training aggressively, ready and eager to retain the trophy.
“We expect to deliver positive results, with the home support behind us. We shall battle the course very hard to defend our title,” said Musiimenta and Namakula.
The Uganda team comprises Andrew Ssekibejja and Joseph Reagan Akena, Anthony Otukei, Joseph Kasozi, Godfrey Kambale, Elton Thembo, John Musimenta (skipper), Abdul Kakeeto, Amon Bwambale and the 17-year old Peter Mayende.
The Victoria cup is one of East Africa’s premier amateur match play events, bringing together Kenya’s leading amateurs and their Ugandan counterparts in a highly competitive contest that showcases regional excellence and national pride.
Since its debut in 2016, Kenya had reigned supreme, lifting the trophy in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2022, while Uganda’s sole triumph came in 2019 on home soil and in 2020 and 2021, the tournament was not staged following the Covid-19 pandemic.
The 2023 edition delayed due to some technical issues to early 2024, before ending in a dramatic 11-11 draw with Kenya retaining the title after weather curtailed.
The Victoria cup has produced many memorable contests, with Kenya enjoying a strong record in the
Competition.
With Uganda claiming the most recent outright victory in 2025 at Kipipiri golf resort course in Nyandarua county, Team at Entebbe is determined to deliver a strong performance and reclaim its regional honors.
This annual tournament that revolves between the two nations, has long been traditionally a fiercely contested fixture between Kenya and Uganda.
As Kenyans pray for Team Kenya, KGU remains confident that the selected squad reflects both competitive readiness and a clear development pathway for the country’s next generation of elite golfers.
