Experience, Skills and determination is expected to drive Team Kenya golf team in defending their title at the four days 2023 Victoria Cup Golf Tournament scheduled to take place from Thursday February 1st to Sunday 4th, at the Uganda Golf Club in Kampala, Uganda.
This is a bi-annual Tournament where Kenya is the defending champion after beating Uganda when the tourney was last held at Kenyas Limuru Country Golf Club in 2022 and was not played in 2023 after cancellation by Kenya.
The team arrived in Uganda on Tuesday ,30th,January, morning.
Team Captain Dennis Maara of Limuru Golf Club said they are fully prepared in the highly anticipated tournament against their opponent Uganda and has assured Kenyans that the trophy will be home.
“We trained well and my team mates are highly experienced and skilled golfers selected from around the Country’s Golf Clubs. And with the Support from Kenya Golf Union and other Stakeholders, we are fully prepared for victory against the Ugandans and the trophy shall be home, “said Maara.
The team selected last week has team Captain Dennis Maara (Limuru), John Lejirma (Railways), Michael Karanga (Kiambu), Adel Balala (Nyali), Elvis Muigua (Kiambu), Ebill Omollo (Vetlab), Sammy Mulama (Mombasa), Josphat Rono (Golf Park), Krish Shah (Vetlab) and Danny Chelogoi (Eldoret).
Under the strategic guidance of Coach John van Liefland, Team Manager David Ndung’u, and Head of Delegation Philip Ochola, the Kenyan squad is poised to make its mark in this prestigious event.
Head of Delegation and Kenya Golf Union (KGU) Chairman Philip Ochola said the tourney is a two-way match play golf tournament that follows the renowned Ryder Cup format, intensifying the competition and fostering camaraderie among participating nations.
“This biennial match play golf tournament was established in 2016, and the tournament attracts top golfing talent from participating nations, fostering friendly competition and camaraderie on the golf course. It holds special significance as the trophy was generously donated by Kenyan marathon icon Moses Tanui,”said Ochola.
Team Coach John van Liefland expressed confidence in Kenya’s fifth victory, citing the meticulous team selection and rigorous training sessions.
Kenya has a remarkable track record, claiming victory in 2016, 2017, and 2018, with a temporary setback in 2019 against Uganda.
The tournament faced a hiatus in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but Kenya reclaimed the title in 2022 and the 2023 edition was not held after a request from Kenya to postpone the event.
