Sheel Dodhia recorded a 30 differential points to emerge the overall winner in the 2023 Captain’s Prize (James Gitonga Wachira) golf tournament at the challenging par 71 Sea-Link Mombasa Golf Club Course in Mombasa County on Saturday.

The handicap 15 Golfer victory after playing 71 nett in a medal format on Friday and added 41 points in the second day on Saturday to win the tourney organized to bid farewell to the outgoing Club Captain James Gitonga Wachira  after his two years tenure in office.

“The course has ben challenging, the weather hot and Sunday with strong winds blowing from the Indian Ocean but Iam happy to have won this event. Thanks the organizers of the event, Sponsors and my playing partners and looking forward to much better days around the Course in the coming days  Iam extremely thrilled to finally win this event staring my season on high note, “said Dodhia.

The tournament was jointly supported by several corporations among them, Kenya Maritime Authority, Eco Bank, Britam, Artha, Stima Sacco, and Cfao.

Others are Inuka Africa, Multichoice, Nulook, Chai, Ketepa, Certified Homes, Ketepa Maisha, and friends of the Captain.

The Club’s green keeper Tirus Githaiga playing off handicap 27 was the runners up on a differential 33 points after playing 70 nett and 37 nett in both days beating his closest rival handicap 20 Elvis Nduati to the third slot by a single point difference.

William Kaguta playing off handicap minus 1 who has been torturing colleagues since the season bean was it again emerging the Best gross winner on a total 155 gross while handicap minus 2 Sammy Mulama with a two over par 73gross and handicap minus one Henry kamau on a four over par 75 gross were the Friday and Saturday gross winners respectively.

The Best nett winner on Friday was handicap 20 Clifford Tollo who had a score of 66 nett and  handicap 15 Aamil Mughal was the Saturday winner of the same category  on 37 nett.

The ladies who played as Subsidiary on Saturday only saw handicap 31 Janet Wasike taking the title  with 40 stable points beating handicap 23 Florence Karimi  to the runners up slot by a three points difference  and youthful  handicap 20 Harsimran Kaur  was third on  a score of 27 points.

Handicap 10 Lawrence Odhiambo carded an excellent 41 points to win the Best past Captain Prize while handicap 27 George Kokoth on 40 points was the Best guest.

Fidelis Odumo playing off handicap 33 with 42 points and handicap 46 Phoebe Makasi on 46 points were the Best guest high handicappers for Men and ladies respectively.

Captain James Gitonga Wachira thanked the Club, Sponsors and players for the successful tournament organized to bid him farewell after his two year’s tenure in office.

The outgoing Captain noted it was a challenge but with the support and team from the Club, he was happy ending the second term on a high note.

“I would like to thank the wonderful team of the Club and Members for being supportive during my leadership. The club has been vibrant throughout the year with improved record of golf events from various corporates including Kenya Ports Authority and also happy to have led the Tannahill team which for the first time finished second at Royal Nairobi and the uniforms for the team that was sponsored by NCBA,”said Gitonga.

He added that for the first time during his tenure Barry Cup was played 54 holes in a 3 days event from the traditional 36 holes in 2 day event under his leadership and hoped that the Club would continue growing to excellence and attract more memberships and Corporate Supporters.

Club Chairman Paul Munyao praised and thanked Gitonga for steering the Club to greater heights under his leadership including the water irrigation project and the purchase of a new Tractor for the Club among others.

Elsewhere at Eldoret Golf Club ADDS BRIAN JAYSINS-OXYGENE PR, Businessman Amos Butit led his team of Jackson Kiprono, Wesley Kiprono, and Mike Rotich to victory returning a combined score of 116 points to clinch the second leg of the KCB East Africa Golf Tour on Saturday.

“We were strategic in our approach to this tournament. Having won the previous competition last year, we knew that we needed to train together to clinch victory again and that is exactly what happened. Looking forward to the grand finale in December. Hopefully, we will fly the Eldoret Club high, “said Butit.

They beat their closest challengers Kipchirchir Kiprop, Nelson Orgut, Patrick Kiprop and Geoffrey Kitiwa who came in second after returning 106 points at the tourney that was graced by over 200 golfers from Eldoret and its environs.

The two teams secured their spots at the tour’s grand finale scheduled for December 6.

Junior golfer Ryan Tolgos who plays off handicap 36 carded 30 stableford points in the first nine and 19 points in the second nine to emerge as the overall winner with 49 points beating a huge field.

Seasoned handicap 19 golfer Wesley Kiprono returned 42 points to clinch the men’s winner award after recording an excellent 23 points in the first nine and 19 points in the back nine.

On the other hand, handicap 14 golfer Faith Mburu carded 40 points to be named the lady winner of the day.

Bob Kennedy Odhiambo who plays off handicap 22 scooped the guest winner award after carding 32 points to beat golfers from Kitale, Kakamega, Nandi Bears and other clubs who headlined the event.

In the staff category, Nicholas Okello cruised past his colleagues to claim the award after returning 39 points while handicap 22 Allan Kirui finished second with 30 points.

Kennedy Serem won the longest driver award in the men’s category while Gracemary Kamura bagged it in the ladies’ category.

On Sunday, KCB hosted a juniors’ and ladies’ golf clinic at the same venue in a bid to further enhance the sport to give budding golfers an opportunity to hone their skills.

Also, a tree planting exercise was conducted to ensure that sustainability sits at the heart of the golf series.

The tour will be back in action on April 13 when Kakamega Golf Club hosts the third leg of the KCB Golf series that aims to reach twenty Counties in Kenya and four countries in the East African region.
