GOLF-Zambian Chuma crowned Muthaiga Open Champion.

Zambian Michael Chuma was crowned this year’s Muthaiga open Champion after emerging the overall winner on 207 gross title to a Zambian in the end of a three days’ tournament at the par 71 Muthaiga golf course in Nairobi county on Sunday.


The Zambian from Nkana club started with a two over par 74 gross on the first day, improved his best of three under par 68 gross on the second day and finalized with a seven under par 65 gross on the final day for a round total of 207 gross to clinch the overall trophy.


“It has been a great three days of playing golf in such a beautiful place and playing among the best Kenyan golfers but it was my day to win the overall trophy,” said Chuma who pocketed Ksh. 115,600 top prize money.

Kenya’s youthful Amateur Elvis Muigua from Ndumberi club fought hard but managed to record a total of 210 gross to claim the runners up slot after recording the same one under par 70 gross in the three days and rewarded Ksh. 69,400 as runners up prize money.


Kenya National Golf Captain John Lejirma of Royal Nairobi club who was last event’s Windsor Classic overall winner, this time came third on a total of 211 gross (68-75-68) while last year’s dominant golfer Michael Karanga of Windsor club this time found it hard emerging seventh overall on a total of 220 gross.


This tournament which is among the ongoing Kenya Golf Union (KGU) 31 series leg in the country supported by NCBA also attracted top leading Amateurs from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and beyond with 13 top Kenyan ladies and two foreign ladies.

Only four ladies survived the cut with Njoro’s Mercy Nyanchama emerging the top lady on 225 gross taking the overall 12th position while Ndumberi’s Joyce Wanjiru was second and 16th, overall position on 226 gross.
Action now moves to the 18-hole Mt. Kipipiri Golf and Resort course, the newest golf club located at Githioro in Nyandarua County from Thursday 20 to Saturday 22 March for this year’s Victoria Cup championship.
This is a traditional rotational tournament being played between Kenya and Uganda that was played last year in Uganda where Kenya retained the title for the second time in a row.
