The driving force behind the ‘Talanta Hela all-ladies’ team, Lisa Christofferson, is excited for an exhilarating journey to lead her team in this year’s WRC Safari Rally which officially revs off on Thursday,March,28th.
According to a latest press release from the Media WRC Safari Rally center, Christofferson commanding her car number 110, a Subaru n10 under her, is poised to make history at this prestigious event.
Speaking from the Service Park of the WRC Safari Rally Kenya in Naivasha Lisa Christofferson, reflected on the genesis of the initiative, saying, “It was actually right here in 2021 when I was invited to come and watch the WRC Safari Rally by then Sports CS Amina Mohammed. And I thought, as I was watching all the cars going by, ‘where are all the women?”
Inspired by this observation, Christofferson vowed to start Kenya’s first all-women’s safari rally, aptly named the Lionesses.
With determination and passion, Christofferson brought together a diverse team of women to form the Lionesses Team comprising eight female drivers and eight female navigators, breaking gender biases not only in Kenya but also across the continent.
She said, “This has never happened before. And we’re here today, which is very exciting, driving under Talanta Hela with four lady drivers and four lady navigators who were all driving in my Lioness rally in 2022.”
Beyond the thrill of competition, Christofferson sees the rally as an opportunity to empower young women to take charge of their lives.
“We’re here to empower young women to take charge of their lives by steering in the direction that you want to go,” she asserts. “And how better to do it in a male-dominant sport, “She noted.
Christofferson’s journey is a testament to resilience and perseverance and while diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in 2006 and given only 10 days to live, she defied the odds with her indomitable spirit.
“I told the doctors, I am busy, I have places to go, people to see, children to raise, rallies to drive,” she recalls. “And here I am today, fitter and stronger than ever, “said Christofferson.
In addition to her racing endeavors, she is committed to giving back to the community especially to children battling cancer.
“I want to give back and bestow these blessings upon young children who are surviving, who’ve got cancer, and who need some support,” she emphasizes.
As the WRC Safari Rally Kenya unfolds, Christofferson and her team invite everyone to witness this historic moment.
“Look out for us, Talanta Hela ladies,” she declares proudly. “We’re flying the Kenyan flag very proudly and very grateful to Waziri Ababu Namwamba for supporting and believing in us, women.”
Meanwhile John Kadivane, racing for Team Betika on car number 106, is among the competitors is also ready for action in the highly anticipated WRC Safari Rally Kenya.
With the event set to kick off, Kadivane shared his excitement and reflections on the upcoming race saying,”I’m excited for two things, and first the Kasarani stretch because that’s what we use under the autocross scene. Secondly, I think the rain, as you can see the weather, would play to our advantage. But I think one thing we’re looking forward to be a lot of consistency. And since we are used to this terrain and wherever, Kenyans would have a slight advantage.”
Expressing a personal connection to the event, Kadivane shared a heartfelt story about his late father’s passion for the WRC.
“My dad used to vouch for the WRC back in 2013. He was trying to get back to Kenya then, but suddenly passed on cancer, “said Kadivane.
Kadivane who is a seasoned autocross champion is no stranger to the demands of motorsport competitions and however acknowledges the distinctiveness of the WRC Safari Rally terrain and its potential impact on the race.
In honor of his father’s memory and the realization of a shared dream, Kadivane encouraged fellow Kenyans to embrace the rally’s return to its former glory.
“What I would love to tell Kenyans is to come out, support us, and come and experience this WRC because it’s back on the time that it used to be back in the seventies and eighties. I personally feel like my Dad is usually by the when I’m doing autocross,” he shared. “Each and every single step, he watches me, and he smiles, and he’s really happy, “said Kadivane.
Furthermore, Kadivane expressed gratitude for the support from sponsors and partners, acknowledging their crucial role in making the event possible.
“The safari CTC. It’s been really nice. Since his demise and all that stuff, at least a vision or dream has come to be, to date,” he added.
