GOLF NEWS-Golfers set to display their skills and talents in the main Tannahill Shield tournament at Royal Nairobi club course this weekend.

Golfers are set to display their skills and talents for the Main Team Competition of this highly prestigious Tannahill Shield Golf Tournament at the par 72 Royal Nairobi Golf Club course in Nairobi County running from Friday April 18th to Sunday, April 20th, 2025.


Club Captain Willy Mastamet said this marks a historic milestone, celebrating a century of elite amateur golf and rich sporting tradition in this year’s tournament featuring nine competing teams.


He pointed out that the teams are namely Royal Nairobi Golf Club, Mombasa Golf Club, Muthaiga Golf Club, Western Kenya, Limuru Country Club, Vet Lab Sports Club, Kenya Railways Golf Club, Sigona Golf Club, and Windsor Golf & Country Club.
“The competition will maintain its renowned format of three-way foursomes’ match play, ensuring intense and thrilling encounters throughout the weekend, “said Mastamet.


The Captain further noted that this year’s Tannahill Shield will not just be a golf tournament but a celebration of history, tradition, and sportsmanship.
“As we embark on the next century of this iconic event we anticipate growth, continued excellence, and unforgettable moments on the course as we are set to witness fierce competition among Kenya’s top golf clubs, with each team demonstrating remarkable skill and resilience across four intense rounds, “noted Mastamet.
He pointed out that as part of the celebrations, the Junior and Senior Easter Tournaments was held ahead of the main tournament to showcase both emerging while seasoned golf talents were the Juniors displayed incredible young talent and the competition also provided the juniors with a platform to gain experience and showcased their skills at a high level.


“While Senior Tournament was introduced to celebrate the legacy of experienced golfers who once again delivered an exciting competition, “said Mastamet.

Team Mombasa Manager Eric Nyongesa said that the Mombasa Golf Club has this year with the generous sponsorship by NCBA been able to present formidable teams in the Centenary Tannahill Golf Tournament in the Junior, Senior and Main categories.
He said this year the Club has fielded the most experienced and talented golfers in all categories under his overall stewardship of as the Team Manager and a Veteran golfer.

Nyongesa pointed out that the junior team in spite of the absence of adequate training with most of the players having been away in school managed to finish fourth overall in the junior category and congratulated the Senior team under the Captaincy of prolific golfer, Gurbux Singh to win the Senior Golfer category.

“The Main team that is poised to take the great leap in the Tournament with a promise for excellence in performance from the afternoon of Easter Friday has in its ranks three National team players in Adel Balala, Josphat Rono and Sammy Mulama.
With the win by the Senior team the Main team is now more motivated and fired up for the win of the Centenary event that has eluded the Club that prides itself as the cradle of golf over several years, “noted Nyongesa.
Last year, Muthaiga Golf Club secured the top position with an impressive score of 496 gross, reaffirming their dominance in the senior category and the 2025 edition promises another thrilling contest as clubs’ battle for top honors.
While Defending Champions Royal Nairobi Golf Club will be looking to retain their title in the Main category, the competition is expected to be tougher than ever.
Earlier on, there was celebration around the Coastal town of Mombasa after its senior golf team emerged winners in this year’s 100th edition of the annual Tannahill Shield Easter Golf tournament that ended at the course on Tuesday.
In round one on Monday, the team comprising pairs Simon Maina/Gurbux Singh, James Mureru/Martin Ombura, Peter Kimanga/Mburu Kariuki, and Simon Karemu/John Orioro carded a combined total of 239 gross and in round two on Tuesday Simon Karemu was replaced by Yobesh Oyaro were the team recorded a total of 238 gross for a combined handsome round of 477 gross to claim the lead.
Western Kenya team were the runners up 480 gross beating the host Roya to the third slot by single stroke difference.
In the Junior category host Royal Nairobi Junior team comprising pairs of Shawn Malesi/Mwathi Gicheru,Kimani Gicheru/Kagame Handa, Andrew Gathere/Steve Kinisu, Shuhan Peng/Bradley Malitt, Kagame Handa/Kimani Gicheru and Fanuel Yebeltal/Yingyi Summer recorded a total of 470 gross to scoop the top spot.
Karen Country Club Junior team with 484 gross and Sigona Golf Club Junior team with 492 gross were the runners up and third placed respectively.
According to Royal club record, The Tannahill Shield is a prestigious annual inter-club foursomes golf tournament in Kenya, inaugurated in 1924 and is one of the largest amateur golf events in Sub-Saharan Africa.
The tournament was initially an event between Royal Nairobi and Mombasa Golf Clubs, eventually expanding to include other clubs.
The shield itself was donated by Mr. Tannahill where the tournament was renamed in his honor in 1938 and the trophy awarded to the winning team was renamed the Tannahill Shield recognizing the contribution of Mr. Tannahill, the first Honorary Secretary of the Kenya Golf Union (KGU).
The Tannahill Shield has become a significant event in the Kenyan golfing calendar with many of the top amateur players from various clubs participating each year and continues to be a major inter-club event celebrated for its history tradition, and sportsmanship
