Its set to be a riot of color, culture and competitive golf showdown as the 4th Edition of the Sotet tournament tees off with 170 players expected to grace the scenic, sea-breeze historic seafront Mombasa course from Friday.
The par 71 Mombasa Golf Club course is set to come alive in a seamless, enjoyable and competitive round of golf, for this year’s edition that promises to be the biggest and most vibrant yet, blending top-class golf with a rich showcase of Rift Valley heritage that runs to Saturday.
Club Vice Captain and Captain of the Sotet Golfers Association (SGA) Willy Sang, who are the organizers, welcomes golfers, partners and friends to the coast and expressed his delight at the tournament’s remarkable growth.
“Distinguished golfers, partners and friends, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the 4th Edition of Sotet Golf Tournament at the scenic Mombasa Golf Club. Sotet has grown over the years with more players subscribing and showing greater interest and having stronger partnerships building something to last,” said Sang.
He noted that the decision to run the tournament from Friday through Saturday was deliberate, aimed at giving every golfer ample time to enjoy the historic 1911-founded club without rush, while soaking in the coastal atmosphere.
“This year tournament runs from Friday through Saturday to accommodate everyone and ensure a seamless, enjoyable and competitive round of golf. A big thank you to organizers Mombasa Golf Club and all our partners who have kept the tournament alive. Together we continue to make Sotet one of the most anticipated golf events in the Coastal Calendar. ‘Karibuni’ Mombasa Golf Club,” said Sang.
But Sotet is far more than birdies and bogeys where the tournament has carved a unique niche in Kenya’s golf calendar as a cultural festival on fairways, proudly telling the rich history of the people from the Rift Valley.
True to tradition, this year’s edition will feature traditional foods and the beloved mursik, the fermented milk stored in the iconic sotet gourd that gives the tournament its name and identity.
According to the program, players and guests will be treated to a journey through Kalenjin culture from storytelling, traditional attire, dances and cuisine, to an exhibition of the values of resilience, discipline and community that have made Rift Valley athletes world-famous.
Set on the spectacular seafront course, where the fairways kiss the Indian Ocean and the sea breeze tests even the most seasoned golfers, the tournament offers a unique challenge.
The course, with its palm-lined fairways, coral waste areas and ocean views, demands accuracy and composure, a perfect stage for the 170 expected golfers drawn from across Kenya.
Organizers say the field will include a mix of elite amateurs, club golfers, juniors, ladies and seniors, all competing in various categories, with the overall champion set to join an exclusive list of Sotet winners.
These includes the inaugural edition in 2023 winner Prisca Chebet, colleague Sandra Githere who claimed the overall title in the second edition in 2025, while Daniel Njenga who was last year’s overall winner, and all have confirmed their participation, who are expected to face stiff challenges from others also salivating for the sterling prizes.
Beyond the competition, Sotet 2026 is about building bridges and brings the Rift Valley to the Coast, fostering unity through sport while boosting sports tourism in Mombasa.
Hotels, restaurants and tour operators are expected to benefit as golfers travel with families and friends for a weekend of golf and holiday.
Partners have played a crucial role in sustaining the tournament’s growth, and this year’s edition has attracted even stronger partnerships, a testament to the tournament’s credibility and appeal.
As the countdown begins, excitement is building.
The ‘Save the Date’ call has already ignited golf WhatsApp groups, with players confirming their travel and practicing their swings for the ocean-side test.
For Willy Sang and the Sotet Golfers Association, the vision is clear, to build something to last, a tournament that celebrates identity, promotes golf development and leaves a lasting legacy for generations.
And from the highlands of the Rift Valley to the shores of the Indian Ocean, the Sotet gourd is coming home to Mombasa.
Expect thunderous drives, delicate putts, flowing mursik, traditional delicacies, song, dance and warm coastal hospitality.
