GOLF NEWS-Mombasa’s Henry Kamau conquers home course to be crowned the 2025 NCBA Coast Open ‘Barry Cup’ Champion at Sea-Link Course.

-This coveted title marks Kamau’s first-ever win in the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series.
-The 2024 champion Michael Karanga, current KAGC series leader John Lejirma and elite amateur Carl Wambasi missed the tournament this time as they had joined George Themburu and Avnish Bhandari in Mauritius for the MCB Indian Ocean Open that happened at the same weekend.

A seven years dream of hope finally paid off when golfer Henry Kamau conquered home course to be crowned the 2025 Coast Open ‘Barry Cup’ Champion at the par 71 Sea-Link club Mombasa golf club course in Mombasa County on Sunday.
Kamau was able to brave the current heavy July monsoon winds from the nearby Indian Ocean to bring home a brilliant 2-under par round total of 211 gross to claim the coveted title iced with a fat top prize money cheque of Ksh, 92,500 out of the stake share of KSh. 400,000 prize purse for the top winners.

The golfer’s victory came after carding a 2 over par 73 gross, a brilliant 4 under par 67, and finishing with a level par 71 gross to secure his first-ever Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) series.
“I have been dreaming to have this trophy for the last seven years and finally God answered my prayers this weekend. Currently the course is in good condition following the current rains, my game was a bit challenging playing against strong winds and challenging tricky pin holes’ positions, but all on my side went on well. I thank all the organizers, my club and supporters who all played big roles to my success and hope the trophy will continue to be remaining at our home club here, “said Kamau.
This 54-hole stroke play championship tournament supported by NCBA Bank, KWAL, and Reload, featured 67 top amateur golfers and is the 22nd in the ongoing Kenya Golf Union (KGU) Calendar of 39 legs being played around the Country.
Golf park’s Sammy Mulama brought 73,70 and 69 gross for a combined 212 gross to claim the second slot and received ksh. 55,500.
Danny Chelogoi from Eldoret was were each Ksh. 37,000 richer and happy sitting third on 71,72 and72 gross for a total of 215 gross while Golf Park’s Rafael Leming’ani played 72,70, and 74 gross to round up with a total 216 gross to win Ksh. 27,700.
Golf park’s lady golfer Margaret Njoki who was the only lady who made the cut after the second round carded a total of 242 gross (82,76,84) to remain single one who finished successfully.
She was among the three ladies in the tournament but Nyali’s Mary Kandu and home club’s Mary Naneu missed the cut after the second rounds on Saturday.
former top lady Amateur Naomi Wafula from Vipingo ridge with-drew immediately after the first rounds on Friday when news from the Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) broke of her joining the Professionals as the first Kenyan lady to join the group.
Mombasa Golf Club Captain George Mokaya had predicted the home club would remain with the NCBA Coast Open trophy and thanked Kamau for making the dream come true saying it the club’s year of celebration after their recent Easter’s Tanna Shield Victory.
“We are truly excited that the trophy this time remains here after my prediction and takes this opportunity to thank all who made this tournament successful and exciting tournament, taking us to second celebrations this year after our recent Tanna Shield victory,” said Mokaya.

The Coast Open ‘Barry Cup’ is one of Kenya’s oldest and most prestigious golf trophies and was first contested in 1913 following a donation to Mombasa Golf Club by Percy Barry, a founding member, the club’s inaugural honorary treasurer, and a four-time captain.
The Amateurs set their focus to the 23rd leg which will be the Kabete Open set to run from 18th to 20 July at Vetlab sports club.
