Mombasa is buzzing, the Coast has a new golf hero to celebrate, as Nyali Golf & Country Club’s own star, Adel Balala, has once again done what he does best, flying the Kenyan flag sky-high on the continental stage.
In a pulsating finish at the prestigious All Africa Team Championship (AATC) 2026 at the challenging Citrus Golf Course in Hammamet, Tunisia, Balala emerged as Kenya’s individual top warrior, finishing an impressive 13th overall in Africa as Kenya clinched a respectable 6th place in the team standings.
The championship, organized by the Fédération Tunisienne de Golf, Africa Golf Confederation and The R&A, brought together 65 elite players from 17 African nations for three days of brutal, high-pressure stroke play from 13th to 17th October.
It was indeed a week of drama, wind, fast greens and nerves of steel, but Seychelles sensation Adrian Andrade stole the show, firing a breathtaking 69-64-72 gross for an incredible 11-under par 205 gross total to be crowned the new individual King of African amateur golf.
South Africa’s formidable duo of Jonathan Wilsenach with 208 gross and Judd Sundelson’s 209 gross completed the podium, underlining why South Africa remains the continent’s powerhouse.
But for Kenya, and especially for the Coast, the story was one man Adel Balala, the only Coast player in the national team quartet, who showed nerves of steel and class of the highest order on a layout that punished even the best.
The team, featuring John Lejirma Kamais (Nakuru Golf Club), Eugene Wafula (Muthaiga) and Maahir Patel (Sigona), under the guidance of Coach Ali Khimji, fought with heart.
Balala was simply rock-solid, he opened with a gritty 73 gross on day one when the Tunisian wind was howling, then produced back-to-back masterclass level-par 72s gross in round two and the final round for a total of 217 gross (+1), the only Kenyan to break 74 gross in all three rounds and that consistency made him Kenya’s highest placed player by a mile.
Speaking exclusively after his final round, an emotional Balala, who has been Kenya’s most consistent amateur for two seasons, could not hide his pride.
“Finishing as top Kenyan means a lot to me. The field here was very strong, South Africa, Morocco, Zambia had top players, but I stuck to my game plan and stayed patient. I wanted a top 10, I missed by just two shots, but 13th in Africa is still a good result for me and for Kenya. Team-wise we played well, not bad. We fought hard. John, Eugene and Maahir gave their best. We beat Uganda and Zimbabwe which is always important for East Africa bragging rights. We learn from this and come back stronger. As a Mombasa boy, to carry Kenya’s flag in Tunisia, in North Africa, is an honor. Asante Kenya,” said Balala.
John Kamais staged a stunning comeback after a nightmare 81 gross in the opener to card 74 gross and a brilliant 71 gross on the final day for 226 gross total and 27th overall.
Eugene Wafula finished 34th on 228 gross (75-74-79) and Maahir Patel closed 41st on 234 gross (78-78-78), both showing flashes of brilliance on Citrus’s lightning-fast greens.
Back home in Mombasa, the reaction has been electric, from the clubhouse at Nyali Golf & Country Club to the junior academies at Vipingo Ridge, Coastal golf fans erupted with joy as news of Balala’s heroics filtered in.
WhatsApp groups were on fire, “Balala amefanya kazi!” one Nyali member posted. “Our boy has done it again!”
For Coast golf, this is more than just a ranking and is a statement.
For years, Coast golf was seen as holiday golf, Balala has changed that narrative completely, from winning the Nyali Open, to leading Kenya in Egypt 2022, to now finishing 13th in Africa.
And for the hundreds of upcoming junior golfers from Nyali’s junior program and Vipingo Ridge’s Baobab Golf Academy, Balala is now the ultimate blueprint.
Coaches led by Coast Junior Coach Mary kandu at Nyali say juniors are already asking, “Coach, when can I play like Adel?” and at Vipingo, and Diani’s Diamond, where the next generation of Coast stars like the Ajello brothers and the Kampa family are emerging, Balala’s Tunisia performance is pure motivation that a boy from the Coast can mix it with Africa’s best and win.
He has shown them the path discipline, patience and believing that you can compete from Mombasa to Tunisia.
In the team battle where the best three scores per round count, Kenya posted a combined 667 gross (226-220-221), showing an impressive upward trend, playing its best golf on the last two days.
That total saw Kenya clinch 6th in Africa, ahead of traditional rivals Zimbabwe (669 gross), Uganda (671 gross), Egypt (677 gross), Seychelles (679 gross), Mauritius and Ghana.
South Africa won gold with 624 gross, Morocco silver with 628 gross, Zambia bronze with 646 gross, while Reunion Island and hosts Tunisia tied 4th on 650 gross each.
Beating Uganda and Zimbabwe is always massive for East African bragging rights and finishing ahead of North African giant Egypt is proof that the Kenya Golf Union’s (KGU) amateur program is on the right track.
With Balala now jetting back to Mombasa, all eyes shift to the Nyali Open in December and the Kenya Amateur Stroke play series where his Tunisia form makes him the hot favorite.
Tunisia 2026 will be remembered as the week a boy from the Coast stood tall among Africa’s elite and led Kenya to 6th place, and Mombasa, a star has delivered again.
