Tourism provides employment, fosters cultural exchange while driving economic growth and to rebuild the sector stronger the stakeholders must embrace innovation and aim to increase bed nights and tourism numbers for both domestic and international visitors.
This was said by the Cabinet secretary for Ministry of Tourism ,Wildlife and Heritage Hon.Peninah Malonza during a two days annual Kenya Annual Kenya Association of Hotel Keepers and caterers (KAHC) Symposium that ended at the Sarova Whitesands Hotel in Mombasa County on Friday.
She however noted that rebuilding tourism requires a multifaceted approach that goes beyond refurbishing the hospitality facilities and urged them to renew their commitment to sustainability, innovation, and the well-being of the visitors.
“Together, let us collaborate closely and define a roadmap to a brighter future where Kenya’s tourism sector emerges stronger and more resilient. I am sure that the Crisis Management and Resilient Center at Kenyatta University will give us a few pointers on this score, “said Malonza.
The CS noted that the symposium unites industry players, partners, donors, and civil society and acknowledged that Kenya’s tourism and hospitality sector is not only a major pillar of the Country’s economy but also a beacon of hope and resilience for the country.
Malonza said In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tourism industry in Kenya suffered a severe blow, leaving businesses and communities devastated because international travel was at a standstill.
“However, we, Kenyans, rose to the occasion and domestic tourism thrived, displaying unwavering resilience and determination. It is this same spirit that will guide us as we seek to rebuild Kenya’s tourism industry, “said Maonza.
She advised that first and foremost, the stakeholders must invest in refurbishing the establishments to maintain and refresh Kenya’s unmatched national brand and secondly, they must upgrade facilities, expand connectivity, provide affordable transport and accommodation and must also introduce new and exciting products that enhance the overall visitor experience and position Kenya as a premier destination.
“But our efforts must go beyond bricks and mortar. We must also embrace sustainability as a core principle. Protecting and preserving our wildlife, cultural heritage, and diverse ecosystems should be our responsibility as a sector. Let us promote responsible travel, eco-tourism, and environmental protection to create lasting experiences for our visitors, “said the CS.
Malonza said the Tourism sector must also be prepared to deal with thorny issues that affect tourism like the case of Beach Boys.
“I believe we can organize them and then offer them training that will make them independent and they will be able to earn a decent livelihood. This will be a win -win situation for everyone in this crucial sector, “noted Malonza.
The CS said Innovation is the key to unlocking the potential of the Country’s tourism industry in a rapidly changing world.
“We must adapt to the evolving needs and preferences of travelers, harnessing technology and creativity to enhance their experiences. By incorporating eco-friendly initiatives and supporting local businesses, we can offer authentic and meaningful experiences that resonate with the values of modern travelers, “noted Malonza.
She pointed out at Kenyans recover from the effects of COVID-19, resilience is equally essential and Identifying potential risks, establishing robust contingency plans, and fostering effective collaboration between the public and private sectors are vital.
“Diversifying our tourism offerings and investing in capacity building and skills development will help us adapt swiftly to disruptions and attract a broader range of visitors,”Malonza pointed out.
She said there is also need to build capacity and train staffs to enable them be at par with current global tourism trends.
“By investing in our workforce and empowering them with knowledge and skills, we increase Kenya’s competitive advantage as a tourism destination. Continuous training, mentorship programs, and initiatives that promote entrepreneurship will elevate our tourism professionals and ensure they stay in tune with global trends. However, I must emphasize that rebuilding our tourism sector requires collective efforts, determination, and a shared vision for a brighter future. Let us embrace innovation as a driving force for change, recognizing that the potential of our industry is limitless. Together, we can protect our natural heritage, uplift communities across Kenya, and create unforgettable experiences, “noted Malonza
She CS called upon each one of the stakeholders to turn challenges into opportunities, transform adversity into strength, and work together with unwavering resilience and a revolutionary spirit to rebuild Kenya’s tourism industry.
“The road to rebuilding our tourism industry is not an easy one, but it is a journey we must undertake together. Let us renew our commitment to sustainability, embrace innovation, and collaborate wisely. With innovation and resilience as our guiding principles, we will rebuild tourism in Kenya, “noted Malonza.
A Director of Pollmans Safaris Mohamed Hersi requested the Government to introduce special rates to Tourists from African Countries visiting Kenya as one of the ways to increase the numbers of Tourists coming to the Country.
“The Government should create special rates for Tourists from African Countries other than classifying them as Foreigners and this will really add value to our business, “said Hersi.
