It’s going to be ‘Peace’ and ‘Peace’ dominating the par 71 Mombasa Golf Club Sea-Link course in Mombasa County over the weekend during the 2023 ‘Mulembe’ golf tournament featuring both professional and nonprofessional golfers.
The over 28 professionals led by Kakamaga based Dismus Indiza starts on Friday before an estimated 250 nonprofessional joins them on Saturday.
A share of Ksh.500, 000 prize money kitty is set for the top 20 winners with an array of prizes also lined up and the installing of the winner’s name in an honors board set at the Club house.
This will be the 5th Edition of the event’s Coast tour and third to be played at the Sea-link Course organized by the ‘Mulembe’ golfing Society.
The other two was played at Nyali Golf and Country club Course.
Club Captain James Gitonga said the event is being sponsored by ICEA Lion Group, ARTHA Insurance brokers, Tudor Health Care and Friends of ‘Mulembe’ and they are happy and privileged to once again host the ‘Mulembe’ tourney which means ‘peace’ by the Western Community of Kenya.
He noted out that although golfers will expect strong winds from the nearby Indian Ocean, the course was in an excellent condition and playing extremely well.
“We are having this for the third time and Kshs 500,000 will be shared to the first 20 winners. We shall also have an Honors board at the Club house where the winner’s name will be edged on it and we as a Club are all set for this great day, “said Gitonga.
The Society’s Chairman Eric Nyongesa who was recently elected and took over office from Francis Okwara said the Western Kenya Community was thrilled to be back in Mombasa for the event that promise to be a big one and will also use the occasion for his home coming celebration.
He said that the ‘Mulembe’ Golfing Society tourney that draws its members from Western region, and focusing in bringing all the Kenyan communities together by playing the sport of Golf, is staging the event on Friday and Saturday.
“We have the professionals from various clubs around the Country ,Prominent Politicians are also coming and I promise all will enjoy the day including the ‘Isukuti” dancers entertaining golfers at hole 19,” said Nyongesa who is also a member of both Mombasa and Nyali Golf Clubs.
In the Professional side, Indiza will be the man to watch after carding a round total 277gross to win the just concluded 2023 Uganda Open at the Uganda Golf Club in Kampala and registered his seventh record Vyictor starting from 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2018 and now 2023.
The kakamega based Golfer assured his supporters that he was prepared and confident of playing well.
“We leave everything to God, I know my colleagues are also good but I will play a relaxed game aiming for good results by focus on my swings and putting,” said Indiza.
The professionals registered to participate are Mike Kisia, Greg Snow, Samuel Njoroge, Jeff Kubwa,Wahome Matthew, Kopan Timbe, C.J. Wangai, Joseph Karanja, Daniel Nduva and G.Felix.
Others are Sullivan Muthugia, R.Owiti, J.Okello, Hesbon Kutwa, J.Kisia, J.Mburu, J.Karichu, James Muigai,Ooko Erick, D saikwa, Kuyanda Nelson Simwa, Isaiah Omwoyo, D.Wakhu, S.Kahindi, J.Davis, A.Galgalo and Edwin Mudanyi.
In the Non-Professional side, the event’s defending champion who was last year crowned as the King of ‘Mulembe’, Home Club’s Andrew Miheso will be the man to watch and has already confirmed that he was more than ready to defend the Crown, come Rain, and come Sunshine.
“I know how the wind from the Indian Ocean often torments Golfers including myself, also there are other several good golfers playing, so it will not be just a walk in the park. But I have been training for this and yes I will defend my crown,” said Miheso.
