Despite playing under pressure following the passing of Kenya’s former Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, home clubs Andrew Miheso overcame all the challenges to be crowned champion of the 3rd edition in the 2025 Kirima golf tournament played at the par 71 Nyali golf and Country club course in Mombasa county on Saturday.

The handicap 21 Miheso playing through a somber mood that engulfed the entire fairways, carded an excellent 44 points to emerge the ultimate Kirima member overall winner, beating a team of 171 players in the 18 holes’ day long tournament organized by the Kirima Golfing Society (KGS).
In his wining speech, Miheso said it was tough playing through such a period of National mourning and dedicated his victory to ‘Baba’s win.’
“It has been a low day with a gloomy atmosphere while playing under sorrowful pressure after just returning from Nairobi to join the mourners but Iam delighted for recording the day’s top score. To me, it is ‘Baba win’ and I dedicate this to him as we join mourners’ country during this difficult time,” said Miheso.
KGS acting Chairman Peter Maina lead the gathering during the prize giving ceremony to observe a ‘minute of silence’ in honor of the fallen visionary leader before the start of the function.
“Let’s all stand in honor of our visionary leader and a true patriot who dedicated his life to the service of our nation. His steadfast belief in Kenya’s potential and his recognition of sports as a vital pillar of economic growth shall continue to inspire the sector and beyond. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and to all Kenyans during this period of reflection and remembrance. May his soul rest in peace, “said Maina.
The tournament that featured golfers from the Coast clubs and others from upcountry, saw handicap 2 Henry Kamau record a 6 over par 77 gross to emerge the gross winner while handicap 24 Nancy Gathungu on 38 points and handicap 22 Florence Karimi on 35 points were the Kirima member winner and runners up respectively.
Handicap 15 Ian Marshall was the Men winner carding 41 points beating handicap 11 Faizullah Kudrati to the runners up slot by a single points difference.
The top lady’s prize was scooped by handicap 33 Navinder Kaur with a score of 40 points and handicap 28 Daxaben Vekaria brought 38 points to settle for the runners up.
Perviz Barnsley playing off handicap 44 claimed the senior prize after carding 43 points and handicap 10 Tony Gachau played 33 points to clinch the junior prize.
The Kirima guest prize was scooped by handicap 19 James Ndung’u with a score of 36 points,3 points ahead of runners up placed handicap 17 Keigo Nakamura.
Handicap 39 Rashid Sheikh went home hay after clinching the high handicap men prize on 35 points and the same for ladies was won by handicap 39 Joan Kimani with a score of 29 points.

This tournament that included activities beyond golf, such as vibrant Mirima beats and mountain delicacies was jointly supported by Mombasa Continental Resort, Winstar Security, Dala Dala, Pauland, Premier Hospital, Ribena & Lucozade, KGS, and Isotonic Drink.
Nyali golf and Country club Captain Omar lewa thanked the organizers saying that the club is a confluence of cultures representing the whole lot of Kenya’s cultural diversity, noting that Coast is a multi-cultural society and appealed to others to emulate the same.
“Today has been yet another day of celebrating culture through sports after coming fresh from last weekend’s Sweet banana fest by our Kisii members led by our Hon Treasurer Yobesh Oyaro. Today, we have all enjoyed golf with Murima cultural flavor made possible by our Members from the Kirima region. We cherish and promote our diverse cultural heritage as a golf club. Already we have the Mulembe, Sotet, Sunhsine, Kambasome, Sweet Banana and now the Kirima. I encourage other communities of the lthe Arabs, Indians and others to join in this kind of events,” said Lewa.

KGS patron Wamunyua Hinga, who also a legendary Kikuyu Music Artist cum golfer entertained the gathering with his popular hit song ‘Salome”.
Hinga said ‘Kirima’ was started by all the golfing descendants of the mountain that reside and golf at the coast and is a celebration of the cultural diversity, particularly the rich Kikuyu culture (Watu wa Mrima) by featuring golf, food and music.
KGS Acting Chairman Peter Maina said it was fantastic to see so many talented golfers gathered for this exciting tournament and extended his gratitude to all for their generous support.

He further pointed out that this was a vibrant blend of sport, culture and coastal lifestyle, with Mugithi band from Muranga and Muratina drinks adding that the tournament played on two courses with day one in Mombasa and day two at Nyali, usually unites the mountain at the coast with all mountain golf clubs.
The day also saw a brief ceremony by Mirima elders led by KGS Patron Wamunyua Hinga, honor legendary golfer Duncan Nderitu Ndegwa.
Ndegwa born in March 1925, believed to be the first Kenyan to play golf, having picked up the game in 1955 while a student at St Andrews University in Scotland, is the first post-independence Head of Civil Service and Secretary to the Cabinet in Kenya.
And despite his age, Ndegwa still continues to play a few holes especially at his home club of Nyali golf and Country club course in Mombasa county.
Earlier, the preliminary Mirima 2025 round one tournament kicked off at the par 71 Sea-Link Mombasa golf club course in the Island where handicap 24 Stephen Kisevu emerge the man winner on account back score of 40 points and the same prize in the ladies’ side was scooped by handicap 17 Mary Mariga on a score of 38 points.
Handicap 16 Johnson Wamunyua was the Kirima man winner on 37 points and handicap 17 Zaituni Mohamed brought 41 points to claim the same prize on the ladies’ side.
Peter.K. Macharia playing off handicap 34 carded 35 points to win the Best senior award and the guest winner on 40 points was handicap 8 Felix Kandie.
