A German based Kenyan Lady golfer Joyce ‘Masai’ Radtke delivered a smile to faces of Mombasa Caddy golfers by sponsoring a Caddies golf tournament played at the par 71 Nyali golf and Country Club course in Mombasa County on Monday.
This was not just about golfing, but Joyce and her German husband Stefan Radtke who are also members of the club currently on holiday at their Coastal home in Mombasa, was sharing her birthday celebration this time on style in a special day with the Caddies at the Club featuring 75 players.
Usually stationed in golf clubs, Caddies are special people and It’s often difficult to play a round of golf in any course and anywhere in the World without their support.
They earn their small living in assisting a golfer by carrying their clubs, providing advice on strategy, club selection, offering moral and mental support during a round of golf in their roles that dates back to the 15th century in Scotland with its roots in the French term ‘cadet.’
In the tournament,Fred Obonyo and Carren Akoth proved to be the best after carrying the day to clinch the top gross Men and gross Lady prizes respectively.
Obonyo produced a brilliant 4 over par 75 gross to emerge the overall best gross men winner while Akoth brought 82 gross to clinch the same title in the ladies’ category.
“Though I have not played for many months, today has been my best with this score and I would like to extend my happiness to Joyce and Radke for thinking about us and coming to give us this day for this tournament. We as Caddies will appreciate if other golfers follow Joyce and also come to give many more tournaments, “said Obonyo.
Jimmy Ismael was the runners up with a score of 84 gross while Leroy Jimmy on 70 nett and Francis Murimi with 74 nett were the Men nett winner and runners up respectively.
The Lady nett winner on 68 nett was Pauline Oduol and taking up the runners up slot was Ruth Awino with a score of 68 nett.
During the prize giving ceremony at the Caddies ‘Banda’ near the main Nyali Club house, Joyce Radtke expressed joy in sharing her birthday celebrations to support the caddies with a tournament.
“This is a special day and thank you so much for being here. It means a lot to me that you’ve all taken time from your busy lives to celebrate my birthday. I and my husband Radtke are excited to have supported this successful tournament and will do the same again next year, “said Joyce.
SOME BASIC ROLES OF GOLF CADDIES.
-Carrying and organizing the golfer’s clubs, ensuring they have the necessary equipment, including balls, tees, gloves and drinks.
-Raking bunkers, repairing divots (chunks of turf) and fixes pitch marks (indentations on the green from the ball).
-Providing insights into the course, such as strategic placements for shots, knowledge of the wind and reading the green’s contours.
-Informs the golfer about the distance to the hole and helps them choose the appropriate club.
-Carries food, water, waterproofs, hats and towels for golfers.
-Offers encouragement, emotional support and a different perspective on the game, allowing the golfer to focus.
-Provides course knowledge and ability to discuss strategy, significantly improve a golfer’s enjoyment and performance.
