GOLF NEWS-Gitonga leads his team to victory in the KCB East African golf tour at Sea-Link Mombasa course.

James Gitonga led his team of Salim Taib, Mary Mariga and Wanjiku Kinyeru to emerge the overall team winners with a combined total of a count back score of 117 points in the KCB East Africa Golf Tour golf tournament played at the par 71 Sea-Link Mombasa golf course in Mombasa County on Saturday.

They had tied with the team of Orpha Wamaitha, Abel Cheboi, Paul Koech and Ken Kimundi who were the runners up team group.

The top two teams have automatically booked their places in the tour’s grand finale that is slated for December 5, 2025 but the venue will be announced ahead of the event.

Willy Sang playing off handicap 13 carded a countback score of 46 points to emerge the Individual overall winner but failed to qualify to the tour’s grand finale.
“I am elated and excited to have retained this title. Mombasa Golf Club is not a mean feat to beat the scores. I played my best ever golf today, so that makes me more than happy. My friends, competitors and everyone in general expected me to win. That pressure did not make me lose focus, “said Sang.

He had tied on the same score with Men winner handicap 23 Salim Taib and handicap 36 Jackline Mutai brought 44 points to win the lady’s prize.
The guest winner on 42 points was handicap 22 Ernest Ondego while handicap 22 Nicholas Okello on 36 points and handicap 39 Joseph Rumo with 42 points were the staff and Junior winners respectively.


Just like last year, the winning team in the grand finale will receive a KShs. 1 million cash reward that will go to a sustainability team that their club is currently undertaking and additionally they will get an opportunity to participate in a prestigious golf tournament.
The tournament sponsored by KCB Bank attracted some 120 golfers drawn from Coast clubs, Staffs and guests with valid handicaps.


On Sunday, KCB held a Juniors clinic that saw 100 emerging talent grace the event as they learn the ropes of the game and the Bank also planted trees at the course as part of its environmental conservation program.
KCB Bank footprint in sports support in the country is expansive and cuts across various sports disciplines.
The Bank has its sports brand assets that include the KCB Women Volleyball Club, KCB Football Club and KCB Rugby Club besides other sports including Chess, athletics, and golf.
The long-standing tradition of sponsoring major sporting events in the country has seen the Bank pump millions of shillings in sponsorships over the years.
The next leg of the Tour will be held at the Nandi Bears Club on February 15, 2025.

Elsewhere at the Malindi golf and Country club course in Kilifi County on the same day, handicap 10 Alession Bozzolasco emerged the overall winner after carding an excellent 66 nett in the NCBA monthly mug and Medal tournament.


Veteran golfer Tukero Ole Kina playing off handicap 14 nett was the Men winner on a count back score of 67 nett after tying on the same score with runners up placed handicap 23 Philip Matei.
The lady winner on 71 nett was handicap 21 Silvania Franciolli while handicap 30 Auma Obama carded a count back score of 72 nett to claim the runners up spot after tying with third placed Hamida Chidagaya who is also the club lady captain.

Emmanuel John playing off handicap 16 brought 65 nett to win the Junior prize while Ali Abdalla’s shot which landed 8.45 Meters away from the 18th hole and the Susan Waithak’s shot of 10.10 Meters also away from the same hole were declared the nearest to the pin men and Lady winners respectively.

NCBA Bank Malindi Branch Manager Fahima Abdisheikh lauded the golfers for their outstanding performances and reiterated the Bank’s commitment to growing the sport across the region.

The NCBA Golf Series continues to provide a great platform for golfers of all levels to showcase their talent while creating strong connections within the golfing community. We are proud to bring this event back to Malindi and look forward to more exciting tournaments in the series, “said Fahima.

The club chairman Benjamin Wasige said, “Hosting this event once again has been a privilege. The course was in excellent condition, and we saw fantastic play from all participants. The passion displayed today by our golfers reaffirm the significance of this tournament, and we truly appreciate NCBA for making it possible.”

The Malindi event marked the third leg of the 2025 NCBA Golf Series, following the successful events held at VetLab Sports Club and Nandi Bears Golf Club.

The winners from this event became the latest entrants to the list of golfers who will compete in the Grand Finale later this year for the ultimate title.

Following the Malindi event, focus now shifts to Kiambu Golf Club which will host the fourth leg of the series on 15th March.
