GOLF NEWS-Kenya’s Kellie Gachaga’s hard work and patience finally paid off after being crowed the 2025 KLGU Ladies Stroke Play Champion at Sigona.

It was celebration as a Kenyan Youthful Golfer Kellie Gachaga was crowned the 2025 Queen of the Kenya Ladies Open Amateur Stroke Play Champion on Sunday evening.

The Muthaiga golfer carded a total of 217 gross to emerge the overall winner of the 54 holes three days’ tournament that ended on Sunday at the 18 holes Sigona Golf Club course, a Country-style Golf club located 20 minutes from Nairobi in Kiambu County, Kenya.

Gachaga started off on a high note taking lead of day one on Friday after playing 72 gross, maintained same lead on day two with 76 gross and put the final nail into day three on Sunday with a sterling 69 gross to clinch this year’s prestigious Mary Nevill Trophy.
“It’s really a big day for me and my family for having achieved this victory. Playing against the best Lady golfers from East Africa with others being Veterans, is not been easy. But it’s all about hard work, consistent training, patience and praying that has today finally been paid off and Iam grateful to all especially my parents for their support and my Club Muthaiga. I promise to continue shining and the sky will be the limit, “said Gachaga.


This trophy was for those players below handicap 9 where her close challenger handicap -1 Naomi Wafula from Vipingo Baobab Ridge emerged the Division A gross winner on 224 gross from playing 72,76, and 75 gross.


Tanzanian’s handicap 0 Madina Hussein from Arusha Gymkhana Club with 229 gross (77,76,76) and Njoro Club’s Mercy Nyanchama on 230 gross (78,77,75) were the runners up and third placed respectively.
The three days’ 54 holes’ stroke play format tournament played from Friday to Sunday was organized and supported by Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) and is also a World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) tournament that featured over 100 Elite players from the Region namely Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.


The Championship which is an annual golf tournament for female amateur golfers where handicap 21 Beldina Monchari from Golf Park Club clinched the Sigona Quaich trophy in the Division B players for those with handicap 9 to 17 after carding a total of 282 gross from 96,98 and 88 gross.
Home Club’s handicap 19 Nelly Njaga with 289 gross (98,94,97) and Club mate handicap 20 Lily Kanyatta with 291 gross were respectively placed the runners up and third.


The tournament also saw more additional trophies like the Dolan Bowl being awarded to handicap 11.2 Rachel Ndei who had a score of 257 gross (87,86,84), handicap 19.8 Beldina Monchari won the Sigona Quaich on 282 gross (96,98,88) and the Mary Wambugu Trophy that was scooped by handicap 24.4 Weny Owino with a score of 323 gross (114,106,103).
Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) Rosemary Mkok said the tournament was exciting that the also went on well as planned and hoped that the ladies enjoyed lots of fun in and out of the course.
She pointed out that the numbers of the lady players are growing while the quality of ladies’ golf is also improving and congratulated all the ladies who completed 54 holes.


“You have displayed high and very impressive endurance and resilience. On behalf of KLGU, I’m thrilled to see the success of this tournament that has brought together Lady golfers from Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda who have all enjoyed the game we all love. This has been memorable weekend filled with friendly competition, good times and of course some great Golf,” said Mkok.
The KLGU Amateur Stroke Play Championship is one of East Africa’s most competitive tournaments for women Golfers providing a platform for emerging talents to shine and measure themselves against some of the region’s best.
