Mombasa’s Nyali Golf and Country Club’s Golfer Jimmy King’ori was all in celebrations after conquering the par 72 PGA-Rated Vipingo Baobab Ridge Golf Course in Kilifi County to emerge the overall winner in the 2024 Kilifi-Uganda open golf tournament. Played on Saturday.

“I have been training hard in preparation for this and it has paid off. The busy season has started and this time it’s not going to be as usual, I can assure you that I will always be on the podium, “said King’ori.

Mombasa Golf Club’s Edwin Kiptoo was the runners up on 40 points and Hitendra Halal of Nyali posted 39 points to settle third.
Uganda team however emerged the best team in the daylong event that attracted golfers from Coast Clubs and Uganda while Mombasa Golf Club’s Vive Captain George Mokaya and Uganda’s Stephen Katimirike were the best first nine and the second nine Best winners respectively.

The event  at Vipingo was part of a four days Cultural festivals that featured in Diani’s South Coast, Kwale County, Malindi , Kilifi County and finalizing at Fort Jesus in Mombasa on Sunday,21st,April is organized by the Consulate General of Mombasa under the Consul General Ambassador Paul Mukumbya, in partnership with coastal tourism stakeholders.
Mukumbya said the event is in its continued efforts to promote the Uganda-Kenya Coast partnership under the theme, ‘leveraging culture and golf to promote tourism, trade and investment between Uganda and Kenya Coast.’
“The major aim of the festival is to expose the unique Ugandan products to a wider number of corporate Kenyans at the Coast, the youth and other regional and international tourists at the Kenya Coast,” noted the Ambassador.
He pointed out that the weeklong included Cultural performances by Ndere Troupe from Uganda and cultural groups from the Kenya Coast featuring Ms. Anne Kansiime, a Ugandan comedian who is very popular in Kenya ,Ugandan cuisine like matooke, luwombo, groundnut paste and some popular Ugandan products like Uganda Waragi.


Mukumbya further pointed out that it also aimed at showcasing Ugandan niche tourism products like the mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, water rafting on River Nile, Murchison Falls, religious and cultural tourism in line with the concept of complementarity between the Ugandan and the Kenya Coast tourism products.

Elsewhere at the par 72 Nanyuki Golf Club, handicap 15 Joseph Githui posted a count back total of 36 points to emerge the overall winner in the Heritage Insurance sponsored Golf Tournament.
He had tied on the same score with handicap 17 Stephen Wambugu who was the runners up beating handicap 3 Gabriel Miungi to the third slot by single point difference.
The Lady winner on 40 points was handicap 22 Anabwani Amimo and handicap 18 Purity Githui was the runners up after carding 39 points.
Eric Mwangi playing off handicap 12 won the guest prize with a score of 40 points while handicap 28 Anthony Mwangi on 28 points and handicap 20 Joseph Warui with 33 points were the Staff and Junior winners respectively.
Heritage Insurance Managing Director Godfrey Kioi thanked the Club Chairman Joseph Mwangi, Club Captain Anthony Rukwaro, Vice-Captain Michael Mwirigi, Club Lady Captain Becky Rebecca, the Esteem golfers and Members for making the event successful saying they were delighted to be back on the slopes of Mount Kenya.
“We have diligently sponsored this tournament since 2008 with the exception being the period of Covid-19 pandemic but we renewed our partnership last year to great success and glad to note that this year’s edition is a testament of our commitment and the strong bond we have with the club. I hope you all had an exciting day on this beautiful Golf course and was great to see all the Golfers battling for honors, “said Kioi.
Liberty Life Kenya Managing Director Nkoregamba Mwebesa said he was honored to join the Nanyuki Sports Club fraternity during the tournament to celebrate the partnership and took the opportunity to congratulate the club for organizing a befitting event.
