Some 180 salivating golfers went home disappointed after missing the Mega ksh.2million worth brand new latest V70 Volvo car in the Kambasome golf tournament played at the par 71 Sea-Link Mombasa Golf Course in Mombasa County on Saturday,3rd, June,2023.
This was the prize donated by Kushi Motors to any golfer who could hit a “Hole in One” during the day long 18 holes tournament where the Car was displayed around the 18th greens near the pavilion.
Despite their great determination, only the senior veteran golfer and father of Golf Champions Martin Wahome came closest hitting the nearest to pin with only 1.1 feet away from the 18th hole.
Bur all the same, Peter Cheruiyot was the man of the day after emerging the overall winner of the tournament carding an excellent 41 stable ford points.
The handicap 28 golfer who is often on and off the course due to pressure of work, recovered from
scratching two holes at the par three-seventh and the par three-sixteenth holes to claim the title in the event that brought golfers from the home club and across clubs around the Country.
Cheruiyot dusted off the torture by posting four level pars against a mixed bogey shots on the rest of the holes in both nines to stay top.
“I have been on and off the course for a while due to pressure of work and today marks my first day at the podium presenting the winner’s speech. Despite suffering on the course with vibrating greens, I managed to make it. The day has been wonderful with lots of full and am excited for the victory. Thank you my playing partners, organizers and the sponsors for making such a wonderful day,” said Cheruiyot.
The tourney that that comes to the Sea-Link course for the second time was dominated by top yellow and bottom white as the day’s dress code and was organized by Mombasa based “Wakwitu”Golfers to celebrate the Kamba community’s culture .
It was jointly sponsored by Munyao,Muthama & Kashindi (MMK) advocates,Wakwitu golfers, ports Sacco,Envasses Environmental Consultants Limited,Khushi Motors, Friends of Kambsome,Africa Bliss Travels Limited,Dala Dala and Pernod Ricard.
Handicap 20 Elvis Nduati was the Men winner but on a count back score of 40 points , tying on the same score with handicap 16 Joel Mochanga who was the runners up and handicap 19 Elijah Ibua was third after returning 39 points.
Machakos Golf Club’s lady golfer Scola Onsonga playing off handicap 28 won the Lady’s title on 40 points as home club’s handicap 27 Caroline Munyi settled for the runners up slot with seven points behind while handicap 26 Faith Muteti came with 32 points to settle third.
Petronilah Kalee playing off handicap 28 was the Kambasome team winner with a score of 36 points while handicap 20 Paul Munyao on 35 points and handicap 27 Joseph Kitema with 33 points were the runners up and third placed respectively.
Handicap 48 Brian Warui colled himself with the high handicappers men prize after returning 33 points and the same for lady was won by handicap 46 Diana Nthiwa on 39 points while School boy handicap 20 Fidel Wasike had a field day winning the Junior prize after with a score of 27 points.
Club Chairman Paul Munyao and Club Captain James Gitonga thanked the Golfers, sponsors and the club’s Administration team for working hard to ensure the day was a great success and memorable.
He noted that the day was a success, full of celebrating the Kamba Culture with diversity and making friendship.
“We at the Mombasa golf club prides ourselves in diversity with various tribes, culture, Religion and different ages and that’s what Golf is all about by bringing people together. This successful sterling event will permanently be remembered at the Club,”said Munyao and Gitonga.
The ‘Wakwitu” golfers Captain Joseph Kitema thanked his team and said the aim of the event is to promote the Kamba culture and promised that they will be back next year in a much bigger and better way.
Meanwhile Mercy Nyanchama and B.Kahniri carded 44 points to emerge the overall winners of the 2023 Kabete Ladies Invitation golf tournament played at Vetlab Sports course on Saturday.
The event was jointly sponsored by Bayer East Africa, the Agha Khan University Hospital, AAR Healthcare, ICEALION, KWAL, Sense of Africa, Zana Leather Craft, Jon-Hansen and K-Link.
The team of Grace Waiganjo and S.Muraguri were the runners up on 41 points while Mary Mburu and R.Kigathi cam third with 39 points.
The Special Category winners were Sarah Bisera and Rebecca Mbinya who had 39 points while the Sponsor prize was won by handicap 14 B. Muthui Mutisya who had 35points.
Handicap 6 Francis Wahome was the Subsidiary men winner on a count back score of 40 points , tying on the same score with handicap 12 Boniface Mungai who was the runners up while handicap 18 Simon Mbugua with 37 points and handicap 13 Sarah Nyareru with 35 points were third and Subsidiary Lady winner respectively.
