Coast based Kenyan Tea Buyer Peter Kimanga was crowned the overall leader after beating a team of 173 golfers during the 2023 Sanlam Golf tournament played at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club Course in Mombasa County on Saturday.
The Kericho Gold Tea Company’s businessman playing off handicap 16 carded an excellent score of 43 stable ford points to claim the overall lead in the day long 18 holes tournament sponsored by Sanlam Insurance.
“I have been practicing to improve my swing shots and putting for the whole of last week which worked well today. It has been a good day playing with my four ball partners and also wonderful this evening to be at the podium speaking about golf and not about Tea business. Thank you to the Club and the Sponsor for organizing this great successful tournament and will try to defend the title next time, “said Kimanga.
Handicap 5 Abubakar Mohdhar who last weekend emerged the overall winner of the Kenya women in Tourism (KAWT) golf tournament at the same venue, this time turned out to be the Best gross winner carding 79 gross.
Handicap 20 Aamin Dhanji on a count back score of 40 points won the Men prize after tying on the same score with handicap19 Harpreet Sagoo who was the runners up.
Veteran Lad Golfer handicap 28 Janet Wasike was the lady winner having brought 41 points while handicap 27 Arvin Solanki on 36 points and handicap 19 Aydan Jamal with 39 points were the best senior and junior winners respectively.
Handicap 26 Ken Kimundi representing Mombasa Golf Club won the Invited Coastal Clubs prize after returning a score of 34 points.
Sam Muraya playing off handicap 22 emerged the staff winner on 30 points and handicap 26 Anthony Munyao brought recorded the same points to win the Guest prize.
Handicap 30 John Muraya won the High handicapper’s men’s prize with an excellent score of 39 points and Coast Radio Journalist Joan Kimani playing off handicap 45 returned a score of 42 points to win the same in the Lady’s category.
At the Diamond Leisure Golf Resort in Diani, South Coast of Mombasa, Kwale County on the same day, home golfer Hitten Kumar unleashed his skills to emerge the overall gross winner after returning a score of eight over par 80 gross in the NCBA golf competition.
The day long tourney that attracted 120 golfers, saw Japie Van Niekerk claim the men nett prize on 54 nett while Randall Adams with a count back score of 71 nett was the runners up tying on the same score with Graham Bowcher who was third.
Vanda Harries took the lady’s prize after emerging top with a score of 74 nett while Muthoni Boucher was the runners up with 77 nett and Lennart Rydberg on 87 nett was declared the senior winner of the day.
Elsewhere at the 9 hole Machakos Country Club course also on the same day, Jackson Musomba led his team of Simon Kimatu, Ben Mumo and Francis Mbithi to podium victory with a combined score of 115 points in the 14th leg of the KCB East Africa Golf Tour that attracted 144 golfers.
“Our trainings and team work played a big role in today’s win and we are looking forward to a greater game at the grand finale at Karen Golf Club Course next month,” said Musomba on behalf of the team.
The team of Joseph Malatu, Francis Musembi, Kyalo Munyao, and Engineer Okemwa carded a combined score of 110 points to carry the second position.
The two teams join 12 others that have already qualified for the grand finale event scheduled for next month at the Karen Country Club.
In the Individuals, handicap 54 Jemima Samuel recorded the best day’s score of 45 points to emerge the overall winner of the day.
The Men’ title was claimed by handicap 38, Anthony Gitu with a score of 42 points and handicap 38 Felistus Mativo was the lady winner after returning a score of 41 points.
The staff prize was won by handicap 14 Ibrahim Lande on 38 points while Nicholas Okello playing off handicap 27 brought 37 points to claim the second slot.
Handicap 19 Lazarus Kemei was the Guest winner on 38 points and Jackson Musomba added another prize winning the nearest to the pin prize.
Nyali Golf and Country Club will be next host of the 15th edition of the The KCB East Africa Golf Tour before the grand finale next month at Karen Country club course.
Meanwhile the par 71 Sea-Link Mombasa Golf Course will be hosting the ‘Maria@50’ Golf tournament in a two days event set for Friday,13th and Saturday,14th.
