Youthful Wangari’s effort trashed by Tanzania’s Madina.

Kenya’s Youthful Lady Golfer Chanelle Wangari fought hard but narrowly lost the overall title to Tanzanian Madina Hussein in the 2023 Kenya Ladies Open-Amateur Stroke play golf Championship that ended at the par 72 Muthaiga Golf Club in the Capital City of Nairobi, Kenya on Sunday.
The three days 54 holes tournament organized by the Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) that brought 100 top leading Lady golfers from the Country , Tanzania, Uganda and other Countries was jointly sponsored by NCBA and EABL.
Wangari from Vet lab Golf Club missed the lead by a two strokes to Madina who was crowned the Strokes play overall Champion.
Madina rounded up the three days event on a total of 222 gross after carding a six over par 78 gross in the first day, a two over par 74 gross in the second day and finalized with a two under par 70 gross in the final day to emerge the overall winner.
Wangari had a total of 224 gross after playing a four over par 76gross in the first day, a two over par 74 gross in the second day and the same score in the final day to claim the runners up slot for Kenya.
“The course was playing well , I tried all my best but golf is golf and we remain to fight off another day as we Kenyans continue to train more for the forth coming events,”said Wangari.
Vipingo’s Naomi Wafula was third on a total of 227gross from 76 gross,78gross and 73gross in the three days while Kiambu’s Joyce Wanjiru settled for the fourth slot on a total of 232gross (76-81-75).
KLGU Chairperson Lydia Obonyo thanked the golfers, sponsors and the club for the successful event and congratulated the winners for their outstanding performances.
“KLGU is the umbrella organization for women’s golf in Kenya and our responsibilities include managing the handicapping system for ladies, supporting ladies sections in affiliated clubs, organizing open ladies events and coordinating the annual calendar for open club tournaments, “said Obonyo.
She said the winners of the open tournaments compete for the prestigious KLGU Golfer of the Year (GOTY) trophy, which is aimed at promoting ladies’ golf in all parts of the country.
“KLGU also participates in and hosts continental and regional tournaments including AACT, G&P and E&CARCT. The Union also assists KGU in running the Kenya Open Golf Championship. At KLGU, we have not forgotten the less fortunate and from funds raised, the Union supports disadvantaged girls through secondary school education as part of our CSR,”noted Obonyo.
Obonyo further explained that KLGU is a Co-Founder of the Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) and contributes three of the seven members of the JGF Board of Trustees and also has representation in the Kenya Unified Handicapping Committee (KUHC) and Golf Talent Foundation (GTF) to represent the interests of lady golfers.
