The Limuru Country club course in Kiambu County will be hosting elite Lady players in the Kenya Ladies Open Amateur Match Play Championship golf tournament Kenya from Friday to Sunday organized by the Ladies Golf Union (KLGU).
KLGU in a press release said, this is the oldest and most prestigious amateur women’s golf tournament in the country with a World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) and Golfer of the Year (GOTY) competition.
The competition is open to female amateur golfers of any nationality with a verifiable WHS handicap Index and if oversubscribed, players with lower handicaps will be given preference.
They will be playing in Divisions namely, the Amateur Championship for the handicap Index 11.4 and below, the Division A will be for those with handicap Index 11.5 to 16.9 and Division B will be featuring players of handicap Index 17.0 to 27.7.
The tournament under Chief referee Watson Burugu is expected to attract a large field of female golfers from Kenya, East Africa and Central Africa.
And with the 2024 Lady Champion Naomi Wafula recently turning Professional and out of the competition, all eyes are now set on the runner up Ashley Awuor, the Semi-Finalists Emma Pennington and Junior Bianca Ngecu who are expected to be gearing up to scoop the coveted title.
Other Juniors expected to make the competition fierce include Muthomi Kanana, Belinda Wanjiru and Brianna-Simone Ngecu.
Also featuring among other top contenders that cannot be ignored include Joyce Wanjiru Njuguini, Mercy Nyanchama, Kellie Gachaga, Nancy Wairimu, Margaret Njoki and Esther Chumo.
This year there will be a Stroke Play Qualifier capped at 78 players on Day 1 on Friday and 48 players will proceed to the round of 16 in each Division on Saturday morning followed by the Quarter Finals in the afternoon.
The Semi-finals will be played on Sunday morning alongside a Subsidiary event open to supporters and those knocked out of the Championship while the finals for each Division will be played on Sunday afternoon where the winner will be declared the Lady Champion for year 2025.
According to the program, practice rounds will be allowed on Thursday 14th August from 8:00am to 2:00pm.
The Championships will be played in accordance with the Rules of Golf as approved by the R&A Rules Limited, the Local Rules of Limuru Country Club and any additional local rules laid down by the Championship Committee.
KLGU Chairman Rosemary Mkok is particularly excited by the Juniors in the draw and looking forward to witness their competitive spirit in the Amateur Championship Division.
