Coast veteran Lady golfer Joyce Kamau produced the round of her life to emerge overall winner of the ‘The High Tides’ golf tournament supported by EdenBridge Capital played at the par-71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course in Mombasa county on Saturday.
Joyce, playing off handicap 25, returned a stunning count back 43 stable ford points to beat a massive field of 204 players in one of the biggest club events on the Coast calendar this year.
Her victory was the highlight of a sun-splashed day of high tides, high drama and high scores at the picturesque course, where the competition committee of Sanjay Kotecha, John Orioro, Saj Shah, Aamil Mughal, Fred Kamau and Kailesh Chauhan ensured smooth sailing from the first tee to the final prize presentation.
An emotional Joyce dedicated the win to her family and playing partners in a heartfelt acceptance speech, saying, “Wow, I am truly humbled and overjoyed. Winning overall from a field of 204 amazing golfers at my home club is something I will cherish forever. I want to thank God, my family and my four-ball for pushing me all day. I just tried to play my game, stay calm and enjoy the course, and the 43 points just happened! Big thank you to EdenBridge Capital for sponsoring this wonderful ‘High Tides’ tournament, to Edenbridge Capital Managing Director Reuben Kimani the for presenting my prize, to our Captain, and to the competition committee for a perfectly organized day. In the battle for the gross prize, scratch man William Kaguta underlined his class with a magnificent 71 gross off handicap 1 to claim the overall gross winner award, a level-par display drew applause from fellow competitors.
The men’s category was fiercely contested as handicap 27 Dominic Makau also amassed 43 points to claim the Men winner prize after edging handicap 15 Dhanji Pindolia, who settled for Men’s runner-up with an excellent 39 points.
In the ladies’ section, handicap 27 Lena Breitner was crowned Lady winner after returning 39 points, and handicap 32 Chloe Dhanji, was Lady runner up with 38 points.
Veteran handicap 28 Bruno Gerber rolled back the years to win the Senior category with 38 points, while junior star handicap 38 Gunita Patel announced herself as one to watch with 39 points to take the Junior Winner award.
Handicap 19 Julius Musyoki posted 29 points off 19 to win the Coastal Clubs prize and as the guests shone too, handicap 24 Patrick Muturi won guest Men with 35 points off 24, while handicap 30 Eunice Masila dominated guest Lady with 39 points.
Juliet Ongwae playing off handicap 30 claimed the EdenBridge Sponsor winner prize with 36 points while Sam Waweru took Sponsor runner-up with 33 points playing off.
Maj. Gen. A. Rob won the Men’s High Handicappers with 40 points off handicap 29, while handicap 44 Wanjiku Wambugu took the Ladies High Handicappers prize with 37 points.
In the technical prizes, A.J. Molu claimed the Men’s Longest Drive on Hole 12 and Mary Kandu won the Ladies Longest Drive.
Veteran golfer 71 years old Zoab Gullanhusein, however had its own script on the par-3, 10th hole, where he produced a sensational hole-in-one to stun the entire field as news also spread across the Club house.
But in a cruel twist, his ace did not come on the designated par 3-15th, hole for the ksh.100,00o prize money, meaning he missed the prize money bonanza.
But his brilliance did not go unrewarded, and touched by the achievement, Edenbdruge Capital managing Director Reuben Kimani awarded Zoab a Khs, 10,000 insurance cover for a year in all the tournament he plays across the country.
