The annual Diwali golf tournament at Nyali Golf & Country Club in Mombasa County on Saturday made history by offering five hole-in-one prizes across all five par-three holes, a feat unprecedented in its magnitude in Kenyan golf.
Sponsored by Simba Corporation Ltd and Cars R Us Limited, the prizes comprised a Mahindra Scorpio N, a Toyota Raize 2020, a Raleigh 400cc motorcycle, a Raleigh 250cc motorcycle and a Raleigh 150cc scooter and although no golfer managed to win a prize, the initiative raised the stakes for all the 169 participants.
With Cars R Us Limited sponsoring four of the five machines, alongside Simba Corporation Ltd, the tournament set a remarkable benchmark for corporate sponsorship and innovation in Kenyan golf.
It was more than just golf, it was a festival of light, color and teenage brilliance that sent the entire Nyali estate into late night vibration with the loudest display of fireworks to come not from the sky, but from the fairways.
The event was further supported by Tire World Ltd, Aryuv Agencies Ltd, Ndovu Cement Ltd, Mayfair Agencies, Kenzuri Africa, Casurina Distributors and other sponsors.
The tournament that was a performance filled with maturity beyond years, composure and fearless golf that left the senior players applauding, saw teen sensation Angel Wangari (16 years) clinch the overall title, to complete a remarkable story of Ladies’ continuous recent three consecutive dominance at the club after Susan Stokes, Joyce Kamau and Petronilla Kalee.
The Queen of lights, Wangari playing off handicap 28, carded the best day’s score of 46 points to claim the top title and write her name into a beautiful piece of the Club history.
“I thank my coach Mary Kandu who always me to stay calm and enjoy a game and has today turned out to true. I would like to thank my Parents, Caddy, the Club and Diwali organizers for such a beautiful day on and off the course. This win is unbelievable and Iam so grateful. This win is for all the junior girls, we can do it and we are ready,” said Wangari.
The Best gross prize went to the ever-consistent handicap 2 William Kaguta who returned a solid 2 over par 73 gross in the tournament celebrating the spirit of Diwali while setting an ambitious new benchmark for golf events on the Kenyan Coast and across the country.
In the men’s category, Dhanji Pindolia showed his class to win with 40 points, while J.K. Muriuki took runner-up with 39 points.
The ladies section saw Daxaben Vekaria claim Lady Winner with 39 points, as Petronilah Kalee, the Fridays Sanlam overall winner, showed her consistency again to take the runner-up slot with 37 points.
The senior and junior ranks were equally vibrant as Rose Naliaka won Best senior prize with 36 points, while 17 years old Mohamed Nurani lit up the junior category with an impressive 42 points to be Winner and Bharat Chavda with 40 points was the guest winner.
High handicappers had their day too with handicap 31 Keith Ajello who won the Men prize with 38 points and handicap 37 Emmalyne Kamau the lady winner on 38 points, as Kanika Shah claiming the Best first nine prize with 22 points and Abraham Bweupe went home with the best second nine prize on 25 points.
But the fun side of the festival saw Matsika Tatenda win the Lucky scorecard prize, while Aliasgher Abbas was the Piga mingi winner with 11 points, a prize redrawn amidst laughter.
Longest Drive Men went to Dan Mugambi and Longest Drive Lady to Coast Junior Coach Mary Kandu, while Aaron Kikuvi was precise with Nearest to Pin at 6 Ft & 6 inches.
Club Chairman Michael Sangoro appreciated all the players and the Diwali Organizers for the success of the tournament, saying it captured the spirit of the night perfectly, saying this is what Nyali is about, family, festival and future.
“Thank you to all the participants including the various sponsors and organizers of this tournament. Today, the golf was fantastic, though we all missed big offers of the five offers for the holes-in-one to make it perfect. But the real magic is the night fireworks, setting the whole of Nyali into vibration. What a Diwali, What a good turnout and a youngster champion. Our ladies and junior program is working. It’s a night of celebration tonight and my will be short. Thank you all,” said Sangoro.
And while the much-anticipated five holes-in-ones were missed on all par-3s, leaving the big offers still intact, no one left disappointed and the 7 golf balls per Ball Pool ensured everyone had something to take home.
This year’s Diwali tournament will be remembered for its extraordinary holes’ initiative and as darkness fell, the Nyali sky was set ablaze, Diwali fireworks, crackers and traditional lights turned the Club into a carnival of lights.
