The fairways of Nyali Golf & Country Club erupted in color, cheers and pure emotion on Friday, as Petronilah Kalee carded a stunning 42 points countback to emerge overall winner of the prestigious Sanlam|Allianz golf tournament, her first major victory since picking up the club in 2020.
In a star-studded field of 160 players, Kalee, playing off handicap 20, held her nerve to beat a charging field to the most coveted trophy of the Coast calendar, sparking wild celebrations all around the Club house.
Tears, hugs, and ululations surrounded Kale and that was the kind of evening Kalee had while receiving her trophy from Gerald Cheruiyot, Head of Retail Distribution-Life, Sanlam.
“I have waited for this moment for so long since I first joined golf. Six years of early mornings, missed putts, learning, falling and rising again. Today God finally did it for me. This is not just my win, it is for every lady who thought golf was too hard to learn late. I come from an estate, and for my area residents and friends to hear that I have won the Sanlam overall, that is huge. I dedicate this to my family and my caddy who kept telling me ‘tulia, you can do it. The countback was tense, but I told myself-this is your day,” said an emotional Kalee.
Kalee’s victory headlined a day of high drama and low scores where on the best gross category, the ever-consistent William Kaguta fired a superb 74 gross off handicap 2 to set the standard for the elite.
In the Men’s division, Omar Lewa (HC 9) was in scintillating form with 42 Points to claim the Men winner title, while Daniel Njenga (HC18) followed closely as runner up on 40 Points and both were presented by Jack Marwa, Sanlam Head of Corporate Business-Life.
Handicap 31 Navinder Kaur lit up the course to lead in the Ladies section with 42 Points to win while Coat Junior Coach handicap 8 Mary Kandu brought 38 points to take the runner up slot and both were feted by Susan Kakai, Sanlam Head of Human Capital-Life.
Veteran experience counted for Wachira Gitumbi (HC 25) who bagged Best senior on 37 Points, while the future of Coast golf shone through Junior winner Angel Wangari (HC 29) with an impressive 41 Points as Lucy Mwaniki, Sanlam Brand Executive, presided over the presentation.
The sponsor and guest categories added extra spice as Sam Muraya (HC 14) with 32 Points claimed the Sponsor winner title presented by Nyali Chairman Michael Sangoro.
King’ori Muthiga (HC 21) with 27 points took the Guest winner’s prize, while Elvis Nduati (HC 20) with 27 Points emerged winner Invited Coast Clubs, presented by Sam Muraya, Sanlam Mombasa Branch Manager, General.
The High handicappers’ category saw a mammoth score where Odell Mola (HC 45) won with 49 Points presented by Carazon Makau, Sanlam Regional Sales Manager-Life Business as Ball pools went to 5 golf Balls each for lucky players.
And for Nyali Golf & Country Club Chairman Michael Sangoro, the success was a testament to partnership, not just putts.
“This is six years of unbroken trust with Sanlam|Allianz and today we saw why. When you get 160 players on a Friday like today, you know the sponsor has touched hearts. Sanlam has not just sponsored a tournament; they have grown golf at the Coast. They support our juniors, our ladies, our seniors. This year’s turnout and the quality, from best gross 74 to a high handicapper scoring 49, shows golf is growing deeper. On behalf of Nyali Golf & Country Club and our Competition Committee, Sanjay Kotecha, John Orioro, Saj Shah, Aamil Mughal, Fred Kamau and Kailesh Chauhan, we say ‘asante sana’ Sanlam. Here is to the next six years,” said Sangoro.
Sponsored by Sanlam|Allianz and meticulously managed by the Competition Committee, the tournament once again lived up to its billing as the Coast’s most colorful corporate golf fete, where insurance meets insurance birdies.
But for one magical day, Nyali belonged to one woman-Petronillah Kalee. The estate that raised her will never forget the night their queen brought the Sanlam crown home.
