GOLF NEWS-Home club golfers Charles Rob and Mary Mariga proves their mighty dominance in a Mug and Medal tournament at Nyali;

Home club’s Charles Rob and Mary Mariga proved their mighty dominance by both claiming double top prizes separately in the Mug and Medal golf tournament played at the par 71 Nyali golf and country course in Mombasa County on Saturday.

The handicap 5 Rob carded a two over par 73 gross and 68 nett scores to emerge the gross and division A Mug winner respectively in the club’s sponsored tournament featuring 110 golfers.


“I still have a long way to go but things are going positive on my side and as I continue training hard especially on my swings and putting, then the sky will be the limit,” said Rob.
On the other hand, handicap 15 Mary Mariga also grabbed double two top prizes after being declared the lady gross winner on 95 gross and the division A Medal winner on 79 nett.
“This double win is a good plus for me and surely my golf is now back and my fellow lay golfers should now watch the space as we are nearing to closing the year, “said Mariga.


The division A runner up on 70 nett was won by handicap 9 Qambar Somji while handicap 10 John Orioro settled for the third slot on 73 nett.
Sadiq Aboo playing off handicap 15 returned a count back score of 69 nett to win the division b category after tying with runners up placed handicap 17 Sheel Dodhia while handicap 13 Lawrence Odhiambo was third with 70 nett.


Senior golfer Johnson Wamunyua playing off handicap 21 carded 61 nett to win the C division while handicap 22 Ushwin Khanna on 66 nett and handicap 23 Ijaz Sheikh with 68 nett were the runners up and third placed respectively.


Handicap 32 Lee Gristwood won the D Division with 64 nett and handicap 30 Edward Ndungu was the runners up with 71 nett.
The guest prize was won by handicap 18 Dixon Waruinge who recorded 72 nett while the day’s best male caddy on 65 nett was handicap 12 Kennedy Kamau.


Handicap 32 Rose Kinyanjui had count back score of 74 nett to walk home with the division B Medal prize after tying on the same with runners up placed handicap 23 Saida Samji and handicap 27 Nancy Gathungu was third with 75 nett.
Daxaben Vekaria playing off handicap 37 was the division C winner on 64 nett while handicap 23 Janet Ouma with 66 nett and handicap 38 Sharon Nyambura on 72 nett were the best lady caddy and the guest winners respectively.

Elsewhere at the Nandi Bears golf club also on Saturday, Muthaiga’s youngster Shashwat Harish recorded an aggregate four over par to lead in the Inaugural NCBA North Rift Junior Open golf tournament.
His victory came after recording a one under par in the first round with an eagle on the par 5 eighth hole and five over par in the second round.
Home Player Phelix Cheruiyot’s 6 over par in the second round propelled him to the tie for the second position with the reigning Kenya Junior Matchplay Champion Tsevi Soni on 18 over par while Justin Ngeera from Vet Lab followed closely on fourth place with 19 over par.
This is the first edition of the tournament which is part of the Junior Golf Foundation’s (JGF) initiative to promote the development of golf in the Country’s region in conjunction with the title sponsor NCBA Bank and ICEA Lion.
The tournament attracted 45 Juniors between 9 and 21 years old drawn from Nandi, Eldoret, Kakamega, Kisii, Kitale, Muthaiga, Nakuru, Nandi, Sigona and Vet Lab Golf Clubs.
JGF North Rift Region Representative Fandi Shiyukah lauded the players and parents for turning up in support of the tournament.
“It is amazing to see players from Nairobi, Kisii, and Kakamega come to the North Rift region to compete. We have a lot of budding talents that need to be nurtured and elevated to national and international levels. We appreciate the support from our sponsors, NCBA Bank and ICEA Lion who enable us to roll out training programs in the regions and organize such tournaments. The tournament is an eye-opener for what needs to be done more in the upcountry regions, “said Shiyukah.
