Mombasa Lawyer Divinah Ongaki’s double miracle lighted up Nyali Golf & Country Club in Mombasa on Saturday after sinking a sensational hole in one at the par 3 18th hole.
This was during the 3rd Kenya Association of Manufacturers Coast Region Golf Tournament played on Saturday.
The home Club’s Mombasa Lawyer rounded the par 71 course by delivering dramatic swing shot straight to the cup using 5 iron club, to achieve a once-in-a-lifetime dream that, threw hundreds of guests and players watching from the Club terrace into excitement.
Before the excitement fade off, Ongaki was again the woman of the day where in the evening, she was also declared the overall winner with a superb 43 stableford points off handicap 25, registering the rarest double in golf.
“”I have dreamt of this since I first held a club four years ago. They tell you a hole-in-one is once in a lifetime, that many play a lifetime and never get it. I never believed it would be me today, on the 18th, with everyone watching. When I hit it, I thought ‘please be good’ then I saw it vanish. My legs just went. I screamed. My caddy was dancing. To also be the overall winner today, I have no words. Nyali 18th will always be my special place. I will tell this story for the rest of my life,” said a tearful but beaming Ongaki.
The day log 18 holes’ tournament that featured 210 golfers from the home club, other Coast Clubs with other across the Country alongside Guests, Sponsors and business stakeholders was organized the Kenya Association of Manufactures (KAM).
It was jointly sponsored by among others partners including Kenya Ports Authority (KPA), SECO, Milly Glass Works, Kericho Gold, Mombasa Bottlers, Nyumba Group, Transafrica Motors, Spiro Kenya, EABL, Subaru Kenya, RwandAir, KEPRO, 748 Air Services.
Handicap 5 Kelly Rob proved class is permanent, returned a solid 73 gross to claim the best gross prize while handicap 15 Tony Minto was crowned the men winner with 40 points.
He edged out runner up placed handicap 20 Rishi Shah who closed with a count back score of 39 points after a prize redraw.
Nancy Gathunga playing off handicap 24 took charge of the ladies’ section to in the top prize with a count back score of 40 points beating her great friend handicap 9 Mary Kandu to the runners up slot who also carded 40 points.
Kandu had earlier set the tone for the ladies by smashing the Longest drive Lady award, while Pratik Patel took the Longest drive Men prize.
The best senior on a count back score of 40 points went to handicap 30 Nitin Pandya and Junior winner with 37 points was handicap 25 Promise Ajello
Handicap 25 Evans Kavisi went home with the Best KAM Member prize after recording 34 points went to (25) with 34 points, a proud moment for the manufacturers while the Individual Coast Clubs winner was handicap 13 Grace Kwambokah from the Seafront Mombasa Golf Club who had a score of 35 points and Guest winner on 5 points was handicap 53 Phyllis Chepkemboi.
The nines were well fought as Navinder Kaur playing off handicap 30 took Best first nine prize with 20 points and handicap 34 Kanika Shah took Best second nine on 22 points.
In Division 2, Lady winner was handicap 45 Wanjiku Wambugu who had 34 points and the same for Men was handicap 30 Gurdeep Nayer with 40 points who also won the par-3 Challenge with 14 points.
The Nearest to pin prizes showed how dialed-in Nyali was as Susan Stokes’s shot landed 7ft 3 inches away from the hole 3, Lawrence Njenga 10ft away from hole 6, William Kaguta 5.5ft on Hole away from 10, Andrew Miheso with an incredible 1ft away on Hole 15, but none could beat what happened on the hole 18 th.
The Best Team winner on a combined count back score of 147 points went to the formidable four of Miheso Andrew, Nancy Gathunga, Hellen Wanjiru and Navinder Kaur.
During the prize giving ceremony, the loudest applause was reserved for Divinah and Club Lady Captain Zaituni Mohamed led the tributes.
“What a moment for our ladies’ section! Divinah has made us all so proud. A hole-in-one on the 18th, in front of the clubhouse, you cannot script it better. It shows that our ladies are playing fantastic golf and that anything is possible. That first ace is a memory you carry forever. On behalf of the entire ladies’ section and Nyali Golf and Country Club, we congratulate Divinah, you have inspired every young girl picking up a club at Nyali today. And to do it while winning overall with 43 points is champion golf. Hongera sana!” said Zaituni.
Club Vice Captain Sanjay Kotecha, thanked all for the payers and supporters for making the day successful noting that it was memorable day both on and off the course.
“It was an enjoyable experience for all. The day that provided a platform for industry players to connect outside the boardroom, build relationships and explore collaboration opportunities. We look forward to hosting such a tournament again,” said Kotecha.
KAM Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tobias Alando thanked the Club and players for turning up in large numbers and said the tournament was aimed to strengthen relationships among manufacturers, business leaders, stakeholders and creating opportunities for business linkages.
“The tournament is about building relationships beyond the boardroom. We are creating space for manufacturers and business leaders to connect, exchange ideas and explore collaborations that will strengthen manufacturing in Mombasa and the Coast region. Today was a unique platform to network while as we played. It is where conversations started and partnerships forged. Every swing at Nyali was an opportunity to forge a new partnership. He pointed out that the tournament was also staged to seek partnerships that support growth, sustainability of the manufacturing sector in Mombasa with the wider Coast region and promised to return back next year.
