Despite rain interruptions, William Kaguta and Mary Kandu successfully defended their titles at the latest leg of the 2026 NCBA Golf Series, retaining the overall gross Men’s and Ladies titles respectively at the par 71 Nyali Golf & Country Club in Mombasa County on Saturday.
The 157 golfers braved early morning rain and wet conditions at the coastal course as they battled for top honors and qualification slots to the season-ending Grand Finale at Karen Country Club in November.
Kaguta, playing off a handicap of 3, carded 73 gross to finish as the overall gross Men’s winner, while Kandu returned 77 gross off a handicap of 10 to retain the Ladies title.
“It feels great to defend my title here at Nyali. It is always special to come back and compete on a course you know well, and I am happy with how I played today. The competition was strong, so winning again makes it even more satisfying. To qualify again is an honor. I am grateful to NCBA for continuing to provide these opportunities for golfers to compete and qualify for the Grand Finale,” said Kaguta.
Kandu said,“I am very happy to have defended my title. Defending is always harder than winning the first time because everyone is watching you. It was also a competitive round and I had to stay focused throughout. Winning again gives me a lot of confidence. The NCBA Golf Series has given us a great platform to compete and challenge ourselves. To win here at home as the defending champion means a lot to me. I thank my playing partners, our Lady Captain Zaituni Mohamed and the Club for the support and the sponsor for supporting such a great series for us ladies and I am looking forward to the next stages of the series.”
Handicap 5 Nathan Ngweno finished as gross Men runner up with a 6 over par 77 gross while handicap 6 Feisal Lasker finished third with 78 gross and Junior winner on 93 gross was handicap10 Tonny Gachau.
The Division Two competition, featuring golfers playing off handicaps between 13 and 24, saw Denis Kiberenge take the Men’s title with 39 Stableford points, while Zaituni Mohamed won the Ladies category with an identical 39 points.
In Division Three, comprising golfers playing off handicaps between 25 and 54, Christabel Waweru emerged victorious with an impressive 43 Stableford points.
Meanwhile, Tony Gachau won the Junior category after carding 93 gross, playing off a handicap of 10, as the young golfers continued to compete for honors alongside the senior categories.

“It was a very dramatic and testing day here at Nyali. We had to interrupt play due to unexpected rains. The course became very heavy after that, but I am proud of how our members responded. Congratulations to Kaguta and Kandu for retaining their gross titles. We thank NCBA for their continued partnership and all players who braved the rain,” Taib said.
The tournament is part of the nationwide NCBA Golf Series qualifiers for the November grand finale later in the year at Karen.
