Home Club’s Christine Ockotch registered her maiden victory of the season after emerging the overall winner during the PGK Tour Pro-Am Golf tournament played at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club Course in Mombasa County on Saturday.
While it was tight race finish in the Professional category after Kenya’s Professionals Charles John Wangai of Sigona, Mombasa Golf Club’s Henry Kamau and Royal’s Hesbon Kutwa carded a level par 71 gross each to tie for the top in the day long 18 holes’ tournament that featured both Professionals and Amateurs across the Country.
The handicap 12 Ockotch who is also the Club’s former Chairman survived narrowly a two way count back score of 40 stable ford points to clinch the lead in the Amateurs category and also won the best gross title after posting an 8 over par 79 gross.
The victory comes after emerging runners up in a Club nite tournament hosted by the Club last Thursday, where She scored 39 points and had vowed to climb high which eventually paid off on Saturday.
“What a day and great Golf. I’m absolutely thrilled and a bit shocked to be standing here as the winning Amateur. In fact, I had a dry season with a recent injury on my right hand but now am fully recovered. Today, I played in the morning to avoid the afternoon Coastal heat and the day turned out successful with this sweet victory. I appreciate all the work behind the scenes to make this day successful especially the course, always in pristine condition, in great shape and the greens in perfect state. This Pro-Am is always special because we get to learn from the best. I would like to thank Professional Naomi Wafula who was in our flight team for all the tips, guidance and for showing us how it’s really done. She displaced Men winner handicap 25 Ijaz Sheikh to the runners up slot after both tied on the same score while handicap 28 Anders Malar scored 39 points for the runners’ up slot.
Millicent Palo playing off handicap 36 who was also displaced on countback managed to emerge the Lady winner on the same core of 40 points, beating handicap 10 Susan Stokes to the runners up place on a two points difference.
The guest prize was won by handicap 12 Dan Kagwe with a score of 31 points while handicap 27 Bruno Gerber on a count score of 38 points and handicap 16 Rameet Kaur with 40 points were the best senior and junior winners respectively.
Handicap 39 Abdul hakim Mohamed brought 41 points to win the high handicappers’ prize with handicap 30 Nitin Pandya taking up the runners up prize on 39 points.
