GOLF NEWS-Machakos club’s Edwin Mbuvi raises the Kenya flag high at the 2025 Lekoa Classic in South Africa.

Edwin Mbuvi raised the Kenyan flag high after remarkably emerging among the top in this year’s 2025 Lekoa Classic Golf tournament played at the 18 holes par 72 Emfuleni Golf Course on the banks of the Vaal River park land in Vanderbijlpark, South Africa over the weekend.


This two days’ annual tournament that features the ICEA LION King of the series ‘winners of winners’ from the country attracted 82 top golfers from the host Club, Kenya, Lesotho and Botswana.


Mbuvi from Machakos Golf Club recorded a combined 73 stable points to be crowned the runners up, unfortunately missing the overall top slot by single point.
South African’s Jake Nakedi who shot 41 and 33 points for a solid 74 points however, emerged the overall winner.


“This is a proud moment for Kenyans, it’s our victory and time to celebrate this time. Am really proud to have got this second slot over several talented South Africans in this prestigious tournament. Little did I ever know that this will happen but I played a stable game throughout and all went well, “sad Mbuvi.
The Classic tournament is specifically the grand finale of the ICEA LION King of the Course golf series, played around the Country where the grand winner of the series is invited to participate and its usually held in South Africa.
In the tournament Kenya celebrated 7 players out of 12 who finished among the top 20 players while the 2024 Kenyan ‘winner of winners’ John Agui from Nandi Bears Golf Club finished position 17 having shot a total of 62 points on both days.

The team who were accompanied by ICEA LION’s General Manager Peter Mukuria and Joe Mboya, the King of the Course Golf Captain later paid a courtesy call to the Kenyan Embassy in Pretoria and met the Kenyan Ambassador to South Africa, Jane.W. Ndurumo.

Ndurumo emphasized on the need to grow Golf tourism and the Sport in general as well as agreed that there was need for continued engagement on creating Golf Academies Kenya in partnership with South Africa where Golf has immensely contributed to the Country’s economic growth.
ICEA LION’s Peter Mukuria extensively explained engagement in support of youth Golf development and the company’s commitment to nature and mentor young players.


The South African trip came to a conclusion with the Lekoa Classic committee and ICEA LION’s King of the Course committee agreeing to developing this partnership of the two events.
The leadership committee is expected to participate in this year’s ICEA LION King of the course grand finale scheduled for October at Nyali Golf & Country Club in Mombasa County.


Elsewhere at Kitale Golf Club Course on Sunday, handicap 27 David Kiru proved unbeatable after recording a combined two days’ score of 140 nett to emerge the overall winner of the Kenya Seed golf tournament.
Phabian Isese playing off handicap 14 also shot 140 nett to emerge the overall category A winner ahead of handicap 18 Mercy Tanui who was the runners up on 142 nett.
The overall category B saw handicap 22 Josephine Chesang claim the top spot on 142 nett while handicap 19 Allan Muhando collected 144 nett for the runners up spot.
Handicap 26 Ronald Omondi was the overall category C winner on a count back score of 150 nett tying on the same score with second placed handicap 32 Mercy Njuguna.
The overall gross winner on 153 gross was Philip Shiharsy while Shelby Bungei on 145 nett and Ruth Kae with 156 nett were the Junior and Senior winners respectively.
M.K. Rotich proved top of his workmates clinching the overall staff prize with 150 nett and Edwin Rutto on 161 nett was the runners up.
Everlyne Cherp and Monicah Waithere were the overall longest drive and overall nearest to the pin winners respectively.
