Njoro Golf Club’s Mercy Nyanchama etched her name in the 2026 Ladies Coast Open history after emerging the overall gross leader after being crowned the ultimate Queen in this year’s Ladies Coast Open golf series that concluded at the Nyali Golf & Country Club course in Mombasa County on Saturday.
Nyanchama recorded a round total of 396 gross o claim the top spot from the five leg Coastal tour of the series played at Malindi Golf Club, Vipingo Ridge, Diamond Leisure, Seafront Mombasa and Nyali featuring over 140 Ladies from the East African region.
An emotional Nyanchama thanked God saying that her patience, consistence training and great support from her Club finally paid off.
“Today my prayers have been answered, I want to thank God for strength and good health. To play and win the Coast tour, with over 140 ladies from East Africa, means a lot. Golf is tough, but days like this remind us why we love it. I also want to thank my Club Njoro, my coach and my fellow competitors, you pushed me to play my best. Your support is growing Women’s golf. Thank you all and God bless,” said Nyanchama.
Eldoret’s Esther Chumo missed the crown and settled for the overall gross runners up slot after collecting a total score of 407 gross.
Monicah Wairigu on a total 375 nett and Lucia Mwaniki with a count back score of 381 nett were the overall nett winner and runners up respectively.
And as a Sea of Orange and Red swept across the fairways of the par 71 Nyali Golf & Country Club course on Saturday, a record breaking 154 Ladies across East Africa tested their muscles in a challenging meet to claim honors in the final fifth leg of the Ladies Coastal Tour.
Handicap 6 Esther Chumo’s name again dominated the podium for emerging the leg’s overall gross winner with a score of 7 over par 78 gross.
The daylong 18 holes’ tournament that lived up to its billing as both competitive and celebratory, was split into two categories where in Division A, handicap 2 Mercy Nyanchama continued her fine form to win the gross title on 79 gross.
She edged out runners up handicap 9 Sylvia Gabil who had 80 gross and handicap 5 Dorris (Jnr) Mideva with 81 gross was third.
The Nett prizes went to handicap 17 Gorrety Mutai on 71 nett as handicap13 Lydia Mokaya with a count back score of 72 nett sat as runners up after tying on the same score with third placed handicap 15 Lucia Mwaniki.
Division B saw home pride as Nyali’s own handicap 22 Hilda Mugure took the gross crown on 90 gross, with Alice Wahome playing off handicap 22 on 91 gross completed the podium as runners up.
Handicap 26 Stellah Mwende won the nett group on 71 nett, followed by handicap 32 Rapthi De Silva who had 71 nett to claim the runners up slot and taking the third spot on 72 nett was Catherine Oosterwijk.
Team honors also stayed at Nyali where the ‘Leslander’ team winners in Division A went to Mary Kandu and Carren Akoth with a joint total 148 points and Hilda Mugure with Navinder Kaur won the Division B category with combined total of 145 points.
Nyali Golf and Country Club Lady Captain Zaituni Mohamed whose speech was met with a standing ovation, showered the players and guests with pride noting that the large turn out the ladies was not just a tournament but a movement.
“We thank God for good weather, safe play and for each one of you who showed up. The fairways were green, the greens were true, even the rough was a little forgiving and today we have made history. To every player who traveled far to come, thanks for choosing Nyali. You brought your talent, your friendship and your beautiful energy in orange and red.
