The coastal city of Mombasa is abuzz with activities as it hosts the 14th edition of the East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games that began from Friday,6th December running to Wednesday 18th December,2024.
The two weeks event brings together over 3,000 delegates, including parliamentarians and their support staff, from eight EAC member states.
The delegates are from hosts Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Somalia which is participating for the first time.
The games were officially inaugurated with a grand procession led by President William Ruto and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir among other Coast Governors and Political leaders.
Thousands of residents joined the march from the Governor’s office at Treasury Square to the scenic Mama Ngina Waterfront, showcasing the unity and cultural richness of the region.
Governor Nassir expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are elated to host this important event, which allows us to showcase Mombasa’s tourism potential to both domestic and international visitors.”
He extended a warm invitation to all East Africans to experience the city’s hospitality and vibrant culture during the festive season.
The games feature a variety of disciplines, including football, netball, volleyball, basketball, athletics, tug-of-war, darts for persons with disabilities, and golf.
Competitions are being held at multiple venues across Mombasa, such as the Mbaraki Sports Complex, Aga Khan Academy, KPA Makande Hall, and Nyali Golf Club.
The EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games, established in 2009, aim to foster relations among the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and the national parliaments of the EAC region.
This year’s event coincides with the EAC’s 25th anniversary, making it a milestone in regional integration and cooperation.
As the games continue, Mombasa anticipates a significant boost to its tourism sector, with most hotels already fully booked for the festive season.
The influx of visitors is expected to provide economic benefits to local businesses and offer delegates the opportunity to explore the city’s iconic sites, such as Fort Jesus, the historic Old Town, and the vibrant Spice Market.
The 14th EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games not only celebrate athletic prowess but also underscore the unity and shared aspirations of the East African community, reinforcing the bonds that hold the region together.
