GOLF NEWS-Home Club’s William Kaguta and Mary Kandu claims top spot in NCBA series at Nyali.

Home clubs William Kaguta and Mary Kandu claimed the top spot in the ongoing NCBA Series golf tournament played at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club Course in Mombasa County on Saturday.

The handicap 2 Kaguta carded an excellent 3 under par 68 gross and the Tournament’s Club defending lady Champion Kandu playing off handicap 9 recorded a 7 over par 78 gross to emerge the overall gross Men and Lady winners respectively.

“There was unusual strong winds today but played my best to overcome the situation that brought this good results. I advise my fellow players to always take golf lessons and concentrate on more training to be a fine player, that’s what I have been doing and really excited for the victory, “said Kaguta who has always been dominating the gross titles at the Club.

Kandu on her part first thanked the organizers of the tournament and hailed the categorization of the winners in their specific Divisions based on handicaps that gives a fair chance for all to compete.

“I have been the Best Gross Lady for 3 consecutive years. Today my plan was to play better than last year which I did. Last year, I played 82 gross at Handicap 11 and this year, I played better. My Golf is improving due to frequent practice, mostly around the green and also as a Junior Coach I need to bring my A game. I look forward to playing among the best,” said Kandu.
This 11th leg of the NCBA Golf Series Nyali Leg that brought together 223 players, saw the Club Captain handicap 9 Omar Lewa claim the Division A Men prize for those with handicap up to 12 after returning 40 points.
The Division B for those playing handicaps 13 to 24 Men winner prize on a count back score of 40 points was clinched by handicap 23 Michael Mbugua and the same for the lady was won handicap 21 Florence Karimi with 34 points.
Those playing on handicaps 25 to 54 in Division C prize was on 40 points by handicap 45 Virginia Flora while handicap 12 Naomi Kikulu on 38 points and handicap 9 Fidelis Wasike Junior with 32 points were the Guest and Junior winners respectively.
The six top winners secured a spot to play in the Series Grand Finale scheduled for November at the Muthaiga Golf Club.
In addition to the qualification slots, all the players unfortunately missed to sink a hole-in-one to walk home with a brand-new JCB 3DX Backhoe Loader prize worth ksh.8.5 million, courtesy of a partnership between NCBA and JCB Ganatra.
This year’s series has witnessed similar qualifying rounds at VetLab Sports Club, Nandi Bears, Malindi, Kiambu, Kenya Railway, Nakuru, Golf Park, Thika Sports Club, Machakos Golf Club, Kakamega Sports Club and the next qualifier is scheduled on Saturday,7th, June,2025 at the Kitale Golf Club.

Nyali Golf and Country Club Chairman Jayne Githere and Club Captain Omar Lewa thanked NCBA for bringing the series to the Club, pointing out that the course is in its pristine condition and that whoever did not play well should not lay any blame to the Club.
“We are now looking forward to the Grand finale and promise that with this year’s team, the grand prize may definitely come to the Coastal City of Mombasa,”said Githere and Lewa.
NCBA Coast representative Yasir Ashur praised the Course for being beautiful and thanked each and every one for being part of the tournament that made it a success.

Elsewhere at Nanyuki Sports Club also on the same day, Cyprian Bundi teamed up with Joseph Mwangi, Purity Githui and Githinji Gachai in recording a combined score of 132 points to emerge the overall team winners of the KCB East Africa tour tournament.
The team of Kuldip Hujan, Omraj Semhi, Dan Weru and Luka Mwangi were the team runner up with 124 points.
The top two teams from this leg secured spots in the Tour’s Grand finale set for December 5th, 2025, with the venue to be announced at a later date.
Handicap 16 Patrick Ekwam brought 46 points to emerge the overall Individual winner beating handicap 26 Bernard Mwai Men winner’s slot by a 10 points difference.
Carol Kariuki playing off handicap 41 carded 37 points to emerge the Lady winner while handicap 29 Oscar Saina from Kitale Club claiming the Guest winner’s slot on 33 points.
Handicap 17 Victor Odendo on 36 points and handicap 27 Kavithe Kabugi with 31 points were the Staff and Junior winners respectively.
The champions of the grand finale will be awarded KShs. 1 million to support a sustainability initiative currently being implemented by their Club and they will also receive sponsorship to participate in a prestigious Golf tournament.
After the Nanyuki leg, the next leg of the KCB East Africa Golf Tour will be held at Karen Country Club on May 31st, 2025.
And at Kakamega Sports Club, the Fairway Monthly Classic was won by bishop Simon Oketch on a score of 94 gross while Leah Luchivya managed 92 gross to secure second place and taking the third slot with 79 gross was Dr. Julius Oketch in the tournament supported by the Club’s Captain Ronald omondi that featured 80 players the region.
