The upcoming Africa Women’s Sevens Cup, set for Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th November at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi, Kenya has received a major boost from Kenya Breweries Limited (KBL) through its flagship brand, Tusker, which has announced an in-kind sponsorship worth Ksh. 2 million to support this year’s tournament.
The contribution will go towards enhancing the tournament by creating an elevated fan and athlete experience throughout the two-day event.
The Cup, Africa’s premier Women’s Rugby competition, has attracted top national teams from across the continent, including defending champions South Africa and regional heavyweights Kenya and Uganda.
Tusker Sports Brand Manager Keza Mpyisi, reaffirmed Tusker’s long-standing commitment to supporting rugby across all levels.
“This year alone, Tusker has been part of every major rugby tournament in the country, from the Kenya Cup to the National Sevens Circuit and Safari Sevens. Our involvement in the Africa Women’s Sevens Cup underscores our belief in the growth and potential of the women’s game across the continent. Through this in-kind support, we aim to deliver an unforgettable tournament experience for both fans and players,” said Mpyisi.
Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Chairperson, Harriet Okach, lauded the partnership, noting that Tusker’s involvement strengthens the visibility and sustainability of women’s rugby in Africa.
“Tusker’s support comes at a crucial moment for the women’s game. Their partnership is a strong show of confidence in the growth, talent, and potential that African women’s rugby represents. It’s collaborations like these that make it possible to stage a world-class tournament and inspire the next generation of players,” she said.
First held in 2004 in Tunisia, the Africa Women’s Sevens Cup has grown into one of the continent’s most prestigious rugby tournaments. Initially a qualifier for the 2008 Women’s Rugby World Cup Sevens, it gained greater prominence after Rugby Sevens became an Olympic sport in 2009, prompting Rugby Africa to expand and professionalize the women’s game.
The tournament now features 12 national teams, up from nine in its early years, reflecting the sport’s growing inclusivity and competitiveness as South Africa leads with 11 titles, while Kenya and Tunisia have each won once.
Returning to Nairobi for the second time, the 2025 edition will be hosted at RFUEA Grounds, Ngong Road, and will feature:
Pool A: South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mauritius.
Pool B: Kenya, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire.
Pool C: Uganda, Zambia, Burkina Faso.
Pool D: Madagascar, Tunisia, Egypt.
Day One will feature group-stage matches, while Day Two will host the playoffs, semi-finals, and finals.
