The Mulembe Home Coming grand finale Golf tournament concluded in style with winners celebrating their early Christmas season at the 18-hole par 73 Kitale Golf Club Course in Transzoia County over the weekend.
Professional Golfer Robinson Owiti alongside Elite Amateur John Lejirma and Lilian Kong’ani were the top winners from their various categories in the tournament that featured 228 players.
The tournament that featured Professionals, Elite Amateurs’ and Juniors, saw the Vet Lab Sports Club Professional Owiti, card a round total of 141 gross from two rounds of 73 and 68 gross to claim the top prize and Ksh. 80,000 from the share of prize purse kitty Ksh. 500,000 for the professionals.
Golf Park’s David Wakhu and Samuel Njoroge from Kenya Railways tied for the second place after each brought a round total of 146 gross while Charles. J. Wangai of Sigona Club claimed the third spot on a round score of 147 gross as ten of the top professionals bagged Ksh. 10,000 each.
The tournament dubbed as ‘Home Coming’ was organized by Mulembe Golfing Society (MGS), an organization in Kenya that brings together Golfers from the Western region, alongside players from Kericho, Kisii, Nandi Bears, Kakamega, Eldoret with others across the Country.
John Lejirma of Royal Nairobi Club who was recently crowned the top Country’s Amateur, clinched the Amateurs’ title through a play off by winning on hole 18 against Nakuru Club’s John Kamais after both had tied on a round total of 150 gross each with the later settling for the runners up slot.
The Elite amateurs had a prize purse share kitty of Ksh. 250,000 with the top 20 amateurs out of the 48 that entered this category shared a sum of Ksh. 200,000 as appearance fee.
The Mulembe main category overall winner was Lilian Kong’ani who had 40 points while handicap 23 Aggrey Kidiavai was the Mulembe Men winner on 39 points and Ruth Wanyonyi playing off handicap 26 snatched the same for the Ladys’ with a score of 34 points.
The Sponsor winner on 37 points was handicap 23 Don Obiga while handicap 3 Phelex Cheruiyot carded 80 gross to win the gross prize.
Michael Chebii playing off handicap 22 brought 37 points and handicap 32 Peris Mwangi on 39 points were the Guest Men and Lady winners respectively.
The Senior prize was won by won handicap 22 Major. Reuben Simiyu who had a score of 33 points while School boy handicap 11 Elvis Mbagaya walked home with the Junior prize after recording a score of 34 points.
The tournament was jointly sponsored by Kenya Airways, Mwangi &Kamwara Associates, KPC, Kingdom Bank, Amref Health Africa, AAR Insurance, Saiwa, Brookside, HouzMe Africa, Denri CIC Group and friends of Mulembe Golfing Society (MGS).
MGS Chairman Eric Nyongesa also a prolific Player who recently won a band new Audi Q Car worth Ksh.4.2 million, courtesy of Kushi Motors after sinking a hole in one in the Kambasome tournament at the Sea link Mombasa course, acknowledged the Professional Golfers of Kenya (PGK) for having agreed to participate in the tournament on a short notice and for the professionals having offered two days of free Golf clinics over the weekend.

The Society is committed to creating an impact within the Golfing ecosystem by deliberating supporting and promoting Junior Golf in Western Kenya and North Rift, identifying and supporting talented caddy Golfers and supporting the registered Mulembe Golfers who qualify for Kenya Open this coming with logistics for preparation and participation in the MKO,” said Nyongesa.
The Chairman further explained that the Mulembe Golfing Sports Club, which is a virtual Golf Club registered by the Registrar of Sports, has during the year hosted several successful Golf tournaments on various Golf Courses namely the Mulembe Alpha Tournament at Sigona Club, Match play between Mulembe vs Great Rift Valley Golfing Society won by Mulembe at Royal Nairobi, Kambasome Vs Mulembe at Machakos Country Club and Kwitsi Khandi Tournament at Karen Country Club.
“At present, we boast of a paid up membership exceeding 420 members and the membership is not restricted to Golfers from the Mulembe speaking nation but also embrace Golfers from across the various tribes and races. Our events often incorporate a cultural flair and emphasize camaraderie among Golfer and the Home Coming Tournament is calculated to provide a unique Golfing experience to various cadres of Golfers from Juniors Golfer, ordinary Amateurs, Elite amateurs and Professional Golfers, “said Nyongesa.
He pointed out that main goal of the society is to unite Golfing communities in Western Kenya, systematically support regional talent (including juniors), and hosts a series of events, held at various Clubs across Kenya, such as Royal Nairobi Golf Club, Mombasa Golf Club, Machakos Golf Club and Muthaiga Golf Club.
