Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Captain William Ruto has underscored the critical importance of accountability in both public and private sectors towards achieving robust corporate governance.
He was during the 21st Annual Internal Audit Seminar held at a hotel in Mombasa where He highlighted the pivotal role that Auditors play in safeguarding public resources and assets, emphasizing the need for accountability.

Ruto reiterated the importance of strengthening the roles of internal auditors in all private and government entities.
“At the Kenya Ports Authority, we have embraced a proactive management approach to adapt to the ever-changing business landscape, aiming to enhance efficiency and accountability,” stated Capt. Ruto.
He further emphasized the necessity for internal audit professionals to stay updated on industry developments and emerging trends, leveraging data analysis and technology for improved performance.


The Managing Director informed participants that the Authority has been actively supporting the professional development of internal auditors by sponsoring relevant training programs organized by their respective institutions.
“This demonstrates the Authority’s commitment to professionalism, and we will continue to provide backing to internal audit functions to fulfill their mandate. I urge you to persist in advocating for good governance,” he added.


And in his address to the participants, the Chairperson of the Institute of Internal Auditors Kenya, Leonard Okoth, highlighted the importance of internal auditors embracing and mastering new technologies to effectively navigate evolving business and risk environments.
In his presentation Okoth stressed the significance of internal auditors evolving alongside technological advancements to enhance their operational effectiveness.


He noted that internal auditors play a critical role in ensuring transparency in key government institutions.
At least 500 delegates attended the five-day seminar with a focus on innovation, data privacy, Internal Audit standards, Governance Risk and Compliance, emerging issues, leadership and ethics.


Wajir County Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Council of Governors, KPA’s General Manager Internal Audit and Risk Management Fred Oyugi and Acting Internal Auditor General at the National Treasury CPA Jane Micheni were among those who graced the occasion.

Others were representatives from the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Institute of Internal Auditors, IIA Kenya Council of Governors, Kenya Office of the Auditor-General, Kenya National Treasury and Economic Planning.
