Kenya ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Captain William Ruto has affirmed the parastatal’s commitment to combat climate change through tree planting exercise.
Speaking during National tree planting exercise at Alidina Jomvu constituency in Mombasa County, he said that KPA targets to plant at least ten million trees.
He emphasized the need for collaboration between the local leaders, Communities, Non-Governmental Organization, Youth and women groups to ensure that planted trees are taken care of and grow to maturity.
“As KPA we target to plant at least 10 million trees and this calls for collaboration by all stake holders in tree planting,” said Captain Ruto.
He requested the local community at Jomvu and their leaders to set aside a piece of land to be adopted by KPA for tree planting.
He further said the Authority will allocate funds to facilitate tree planting and nurturing by the locals.
” I want the Jomvu residents and their member of Parliament to allocate land for KPA to adopt and plant trees through the help of locals who will be responsible for nurturing the trees, “said Capt. Ruto.
His sentiments were echoed by Jomvu Member of Parliament Twalib Badi who called upon the Community to continue planting tree to eradicate the challenge of deforestation.
Twalib urged people living in riparian land to heed to Government’s directive to vacate those areas and evade the dangers of floods.
On the other hand, Duncan Hunda, Secretary transport in the Ministry of Roads and Transport who represented Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed an approximated 27,000 trees to have been planted before noon on Friday.
He encouraged the Residents to plant more trees and nurture those that had been planted.
” We would like to continue working with the Community to plant as many trees as possible, the only thing you can do for your Country is making it better than you found it and the only way to do that is to improve on matters of environment by planting trees,” said Hunda.
